Most new societies start out pretty equitably, but as population grows and labour costs go through the floor, inequality rises. Like night following day. It then boils down to hard political choices as to what you do about inequality. The US has yet to face that reckoning.

Funnily enough I've just read it. Archer epitomised the worst excesses of Thatcherism: a sense of entitlement coupled with a corruption that verged on the psychopathic. Good riddance. And I can't even read his obits with much pleasure as they seek to humanise the toerag.
