Not exactly historical, but I flinch in “Doctor Zhivago” (1965) when Komarovsky says “Call me Viktor Ippolitovich” and Lara giggles and says “I couldn’t possibly.” First name + patronymic is a very respectful form of address, not at all intimate.

Imagine my mortification in grade school when I insisted that “gug” was another word for “train.” I like to think it was cognate with the German “Zug.” My daughter similarly learned the hard way in college that “skibble” (from “Eloise”) is not standard English for “hurry up, move fast.”

Oh indeed, no one really repents. I just found it very telling that Plavšić signed a plea agreement admitting to crimes, and then complained of having to live among criminals

Yup, that’s the kind of cases I have worked on in the US (after 20+ years in ICTY/MICT). The only US case where someone was tried for the crime itself, rather than immigration charges, ended in a very quick acquittal. I appear as an historical expert, to explain ex-YU and the wars to US juries.

Just to be clear, my first comment about the non-repentant war criminal who didn’t think she was a criminal refers to Plavšić, not the US defendant.

There was an interesting case in the US: a Serb woman from Tarčin who joined the Muslim Zulfikar paramilitary unit, charged with crimes against Serb prisoners on Mount Inman. She pleaded guilty the day before I was due to testify at her trial. She must have read my expert report 😉

She acknowledged her crimes in her plea agreement, and later complained that she had to live among criminals in prison
