Like with PR, there's to be a whole Nat Commission. Keeps them happy chatting on what is the best form of PR. And he's committed to considering making "it" part of a manifesto. Which doesn't seem much to me. And so on and on with other issues. Action is deferred. After the next election. On...

My theory with Burnham is he says stuff that some element of the supportive chattering class agrees with, and it's noncommittal, but they love it. There's no policy connection. To be suspicious, its helpful to keep some people talking. True for govt to be effective you need to stop talking..

Below thread is good; I'd add to annoy people further: the left is split. So is the right. This is a left dominant seat, so only the left split mattered here, but these splits are bad news for both blocs where the blocs are closer. And the LD centre does not exist, at least here.

Rubio going on about Cortes and 'civilisation' makes sense in this context of mad lusts for gold and land. No other President would have been consumed by a lust for cash.

I could care less about football, and realise the sport is more corrupt than Trump, but allowing some idiot and evil Middle Eastern sheik to openly buy his way around the UK law.....is morally wrong and needs to be stopped.

I doubt she's into the systems specifics. There is a valid concern though: what if an unknown cargo ship off the coast launches 5-10 drones at London? Is there any defence in place?

Very fun, in most part I shop where I do, Tesco, cause its the closest one to my house. When I lived elsewhere it was a Sainsbury's. Having said that, the Tory- M&S is odd. Like M&S is expensive like Waitrose but with iffy quality? Does the English cachet it has really mean more business?

Ah, unrepentant hard core philistinism. Quite a bit of it in the Labour party too, truth be told, but usually kept a lot more quiet, in both parties. Again, I see a huge space for a party that cares about culture, community spaces, for all.

Not really able to handle Big Debate right now but isn't it just that some people are using "Zionism" to mean "the core proposition of a 19th century nationalist movement i.e. that the Jewish people get a state" some people to mean "the ideology of the present expansionist settler movement"...

I think house building will be trickier- the anti ULEZ and Tory outer belt has green belt housing plans which are not popular. Is he opposed as they are Labour plans? Also - the "meh" point applies to himself too?

Yeah, I mean I think all the basic systems generate equal results, so trying to change the voting system is a waste of time. But adherents to the PR cause almost never get push back, as no-one can be bothered, so when things get a little serious, they are surprised.

DBurx @dburx.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I think a referendum would be closer now, as in 2011, there was a lot of PR is a foreign Euro thing, which was more unpopular then. It will still lose I predict, unless both Tories and Labour campaign for it.
100
DBurx @dburx.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But then, for a referendum, the particular flavour of PR/non-PR change on offer will no doubt be perceived to benefit one party, so all the others will be unenthusiastic.

DBurx @dburx.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Its dangerous not to go a Referendum route, as if not, there would be no barrier at all to a future govt changing it howsoever they liked. In Italy, the govt does that but is constrained by the judiciary & constitutional limits. We have no such limits.

Burnham's Man City comments made me realise why I haven't bothered writing an article about politics since he became PM; he's so incoherent that there's nothing to properly engage with. He's very like Johnson where it's all a ragbag of random beliefs shaped by youthful idealism or career experiences

As Robert says, step 1 - discussions have continued since 1918; no result so far. No sign of one. Any system will favour someone; others will thus unite against it.

DBurx @dburx.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Since 1918 - the exact PR (or new) model flavour proposed is, amazingly, perceived to benefit one party, and the others can't agree on it: paralysis.

DBurx @dburx.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Bit stunning, not that Burnham reads, can write, has literary taste and a mind, but that we just had a few PMs who couldn't and didn't. And it showed. There's some hope for him; since I'm not convinced any of his opponents have read or wrote much recently.

One issue on the PR referendum, or neverendum, is if we have another in say 2030, 19 years after the last, what is the reason not to have a Scottish one 3 years after that?

This is very good as a model for building consensus for change, (quibble: raises but does not address the 'we'll change the system every parliament' problem). The Jenkins model would be excellent if the commission is for party & opinion management, not actual change, as proven by its results.

Its not a sustainable message for Labour for 3 years. I don't think that means an early election, so either they deliver something before May 29 or perish.

Its a very solid piece by Burnham; as in, he can write and make an argument. Starmer never could write anything, even using ghosts. I wonder if Kemi can come up with any counter beyond shrieking about the triple lock. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...
