NPS is also losing money by not staffing some places. I went to Badlands National Park this weekend and the entrance was station was not staffed and instead had a sign asking visitors to instead pay the entry fee by QR code.
NPS entrance station at the Interior, SD entrance to Badlands National Park on Sunday May 24th. It is closed and not accepting payments in person.

It is not visible in the photo, but the cost for every private vehicle to enter the park is $30. There were tons of cars there, I have no idea how many paid.

Weird, the baltic dirty tanker index is at a multi-year high.
12-month chart of baltic dirty tanker index, from Reuter's Japanese site, because for some reason their US version doesn't chart BAID anymore.

Related, getting good charts of BAID is unnecessarily difficult for those of us without a Terminal or other paid subscriptions, even CNBC and others don't track it well or at all anymore.

Big time. Further consolidation in an already tight industry just makes the supply chain more fragile and hurts ranchers and consumers. Chart is as of 2019 from a story about a KS plant fire affecting the industry. It’s probably further consolidated now.

I am the actual bluesky stereotypical 38 year-old and my parents were in school during integration, this is not ancient history! The middle school I went to was the old black school in town, it even had (has?) an old championship banner in the gym from the pre-1970 teams.
Prior to integration of schools in 1970, Guinyard-Butler Middle School was originally Barnwell’s school for colored people. The existing building on Allen Street was built in 1953 specifically for the colored children of Barnwell 45.

In Barnwell, the public school for colored people was created and organized under Reverend Watson. Professor Butler served as the second principal and later the school was named in his honor. Professor Solomon A. Guinyard served as principal from 1930 until school integration in 1970. In 1967, Butler School was renamed Guinyard-Butler School in honor of Professor Guinyard’s 37 years as principal.

After the integration of schools in 1970, the school on Allen street was named Guinyard-Butler Middle school and housed grades 6-8 until the opening of Barnwell Elementary School in 2005. Currently, Guinyard-Butler Middle School is home to grades 7-8 and boasts an enrollment of approximately 350 students.

In case anyone is still wondering, this is also an ADA violation. You cannot augment an appropriation without valid statutory authority to do so.
Another type of potential Anti-deficiency Act violation is the augmentation of funds, wherein a Federal agency supplements its appropriations from outside sources without specific statutory authority. This augmentation prohibition rule is derived from several enactments of Congress rather than a specific statute. As explained in the Government Accountability Office (GAO) Red Book, “the objective of the rule against augmentation is to prevent a government agency from undercutting the congressional power of the purse by circuitously exceeding the amount Congress has appropriated for that activity.” In addition, Title 31, US Code, Section 1301(a), states that “appropriations shall be applied only to the objects for which the appropriations were made except as otherwise provided by law.”

Today is a good day to not violate 13 USC 1341, lest you be subject to the penalties of section 1350.

Me and the family went to downtown Chicago over Labor Day weekend. We walked the streets, played in parks, and rode public transportation the whole time. Never felt unsafe or even uncomfortable. The city was absolutely beautiful and we had a great time.

I was born and raised less than 30 minutes from there and never knew about the Hamburg Massacre until long after I finished college. Same thing for the lynching of 8 black men in Barnwell in 1889.
South Carolina was the site of one of the largest lynchings. On December 28, 1889, in Barnwell County eight African American men were accused of murdering a local merchant. A mob broke them out of jail, tied them to trees, and then shot them. In 1926 Aiken was the site of the Lowman family lynching. A sheriff and his deputies, all members of the Ku Klux Klan, arrived to arrest one of the Lowman sons. Upon hearing that the boy was gone, the sheriff attacked his sister. The resulting scuffle ended with mother Lowman shot by the sheriff, who in turn was killed by a stray bullet. The remaining Lowmans were arrested and tried. When one brother was acquitted, a Klan-led mob stormed the jail, dragged them out, and shot them.

Here is the memo:
MEMORANDUM FOR SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
DEPUTY SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
April 3, 2025
SUBJECT: Evaluation of the Secretary of Defense's Reported Use of a Commercially Available
Messaging Application for Official Business
(Project No. D2025-DEVOPC-0095.000)
The purpose of this memorandum is to notify you that we are initiating the subject
evaluation. We are conducting this evaluation in response to a March 26, 2025 letter I received
from the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, requesting
that I conduct an inquiry into recent public reporting on the Secretary of Defense's use of an
unclassified commercially available messaging application to discuss information pertaining to
military actions in Yemen in March 2025.1
The objective of this evaluation is to determine the extent to which the Secretary of
Defense and other DoD personnel complied with DoD policies and procedures for the use of a
commercial messaging application for official business. Additionally, we will review
compliance with classification and records retention requirements.
We may revise the objective as the evaluation proceeds. We plan to perform this
evaluation in accordance with the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency
"Quality Standards for Inspection and Evaluation."
We will perform the evaluation in Washington, D.C. and at the U.S. Central Command
Headquarters in Tampa, Florida. We may identify additional locations during the evaluation.

We request that you designate two points of contact for this evaluation within 5 days of
this memorandum. One point of contact should be a Government employee—a GS-15, pay band
equivalent, or military equivalent—who is knowledgeable of the subject. The second point of
contact should be a member of the Senior Executive Service or a General/Flag Officer who is
familiar with the subject and could serve as a point of engagement with DoD Office of Inspector
General senior leaders, if necessary. Send each contact's name, title, grade/pay band, phone
number, and email address to
The Inspector General Act of 1978, 5 U.S.C. §§ 401-424, as amended, authorizes us to
have access to personnel and materials as we determine necessary to perform our oversight in a
timely manner. You can obtain information about the DoD Office of Inspector General from
DoD Directive 5106.01, "Inspector General of the Department of Defense (IG DoD)," April 20,
1 We received similar requests from individual members of Congress and considered those requests in initiating this
evaluation.

Records and Information," November 13, 2024. Our website is www.dodig.mil.

I use the rolled biscuits recipe here with butter. I do 1.5x the written amounts in it for a bigger batch. Plus this time I put in a little whipping cream in the milk, it made them a little fluffier. The height just comes from the folding/layers and not rolling the dough out too thin.
