Every life stolen was an entire world. The point is not to pretend that all we need is shared mourning, or to equate the suffering on both sides. Reckoning and accountability are required.

Not enough people understand the importance of what he is doing. The people who do understand also understand the intellectual and moral loneliness of such a position — why everyone seems angry at him right now and why those who don’t are mostly quiet, too scared to come to his defense.

Sometimes, I think, it is easier to define concepts like colonialism, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and genocide, and then confirm with our interlocutors that we are beginning from the shared premise that all of these things, using our mutually agreed upon definitions, are horrible.

Diana B. Greenwald @dbgreenwald.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
... I do think it is pointless to argue with people about the implications of a term when you are defining the term differently from the start. All the logic underpinning statements like "A implies B" falls apart if we can't definitionally agree on what A is.

Palestinian homes and buildings demolished by Israeli forces in the West Bank, due to lacking permits, over a six-day period from September 15 to 21.👇

The 2026 weekly average of demolitions for lack of permit (43) is already over two times what it was in 2022 (18). It has been on a secular increase since Smotrich.

On home demolitions and forced displacement in the West Bank, from the OCHA OPT update covering September 15-21. www.ochaopt.org/content/huma...
Direct quote from OCHA OPT update: “During the reporting period, Israeli authorities demolished 86 Palestinian-owned structures across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, for lacking Israeli-issued building permits, and one Palestinian family of six was displaced after being forced to demolish its home in Silwan. Overall, the 87 structures included 30 homes, 49 agricultural and WASH structures, and eight other structures. The demolitions displaced 147 Palestinians, including 73 children, of whom 134 were in Area C and 13 in East Jerusalem, more than three times the 2026 weekly average of 43 people displaced on these grounds.”Graph from OCHA report showing weekly average demolitions of Palestinian homes for lack of permit from 2009-2026. Showing ups and downs, but hovering around an average of 12-14 demos per week from 2009-2018. In 2026 we are seeing an average of 43 per week so far; it has been on a steady increase since 2022 (18 demos per week).

Just sharing here in case anyone, or anyone you know, needed to hear it.
When Mayor Mamdani launched his new, $12 million+ initiative to combat antisemitism in NYC, I expected to see a bunch of cynical comments from those on the right — and even, sadly, more “centrist” voters who identify as strong Zionists and dislike everything Mamdani says or does (some, but not all, of which is due to underlying Islamophobia and racism). What I did not totally expect was the uproar in social media comments sections from those who present themselves as pro-Palestine leftists. Fortunately, I don’t associate much with people who moonlight as internet trolls, but I do associate with the “pro-Palestine left,” and seeing this type of discourse is really gross. This Jewish Left subreddit has a bunch of summaries of, and reactions to, the kinds of comments that Mamdani’s announcement elicited: https://www.reddit.com/r/jewishleft/s/NK8f9OHxJn

It is really important that those of us on the left both a) educate our advocacy communities on antisemitism, and b) cast out those who refuse to listen and learn. Many, many people and institutions have indeed failed us by using the cudgel of antisemitism to try to stamp out a valid, rights-based discourse on Israel/Palestine that they don’t want to hear. But antisemitism is still a real f-ing thing, and the mayor is addressing it because it is a real f-ing thing. Stop making the problem worse.

When our local USA TODAY-affiliated news organization posted this story, there were lots of replies celebrating it, including e.g. these. Nothing to see here, folks! Just demanding that *certain* types of Jews be expelled en masse, but it’s only a very specific type of Jew so it’s all good!

Another thing to note about this is that some of the imagery of northern Gaza is dated as far back as December 2024, so what we are seeing is likely an underestimate of the total devastation.

Oddly, he seems to have Israeli citizenship. (Whether he is mainstream Satmar or Neturei Karta he is probably not safe there?) Bottom line: Trump's DHS views itself as the ultimate authority on antisemitism, and in this role it will hide behind obfuscatory logic to deport the "wrong" kinds of Jews.

I just screen recorded a tour through Google satellite imagery of Gaza, some of which was just updated with 2026 images. This is just over 10 minutes long and goes basically north to south through Gaza. It only captures a very small fraction of the destruction. youtu.be/mpTgjAhJ78U?...

Please look at the updated Google Maps satellite imagery of Rafah: maps.app.goo.gl/nkxomMi1d9zL... The total destruction goes all the way northwest to the sea, all the way up to Khan Yunis, where the destruction and killing continues today. It is all of southern Gaza. All of it.

Screenshot from a post in r/JewishLeft below. Indeed.
“ If Israel is for all Jews, than how can it remove citizenship of Jewish citizens it disagrees with? Where do people go? Both Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor seem to be at least third generation Israeli. If one doesn't make oneself a good Jew, then, they deserve statelessness and galut, is what the Medinat is saying. We talk about how we wanted a home with no conditions for our permanent safety, but it seems we're still copying the people we lived amongst who gave us conditional citizenships and tolerated us only if we toed the line and knew our place. That is not a country for Jews. It's just a country for Jews They Like.”

It is also of course possible to trade your labor for books (i.e. review copies, serving on book award committees), but lower SES faculty and those affiliated with less well-endowed institutions are probably more likely to pursue such strategies.

Mayor Mamdani was the only senior elected official who stayed at the 9/11 memorial ceremony at the WTC until the end. It started at 8:40 AM, and concluded close to 12:30 PM. Most of the other current electeds left at various times. Former Mayors Bloomberg & Giuliani stayed.

Mamdani stayed until the end of the memorial ceremony at which point he was seen talking with 9/11 victims' family members. All of the other senior elected officials left the 9/11 Memorial before the reading of the names concluded.
