20th Saturday @trentbridge.co.uk Test in a row for me today. The things we've seen! The nonsense we've talked! The beer cup recycling systems we've navigated!

Sorry to hear about the death of John Fox, co-founder of Welfare State International and doyen of British community arts. His 2013 statement on the role of the artist remains an important read. Imagine a cultural policy based on that!

...but his diagnosis of the problems in HE - and especially the role of academic labour in any future solution to them - is quite compelling in my view. This on 'soft automation' might resonate with anyone whose working day is taken up trying to get access to the systems they need to do their jobs.

I don't know what it is about working in a University, but I think about Harry Tuttle - the rogue heating engineer in Brazil who goes about secretly fixing stuff despite not having the right forms or permissions- a lot. I think he might be my hero. #academicsky

If this was such an echo chamber, I'd expect to be reading a lot more Metro One Day Cup Final September scheduling outrage than I am.
