last year we did a little made up holiday called Opt Out October that was all about taking control of your data across platforms. This year we decided to talk about how many excellent alternatives to the products made by big tech are out there www.eff.org/pages/welcom...

As per my previous blogging about real history being age-gated, a folk song merely about the 1966 Aberfan disaster now requires age verification. Which is a fairly awful irony. Chapeau @cjforms.bsky.social
YouTube screen cap showing “sign in to confirm your age. This video may be inappropriate for some users”. The song is about Aberfan.

Certainly by 7pm, apart from a steady trickle of City workers who’d been down the pub, heading for London Bridge Station, it was pretty quiet. I didn’t think “properly dodgy”, but then I’m a bloke. Friend had a small business round the back of Borough Tube, so would brave it for the occasional beer🙂

The problem isn't rogue #AI models, it's *negligent companies*. If a biomedical firm put their product in public water supply because they wanted to test it 'in the real world', they'd be treated as criminal at corporate & individual level. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

I really hope I’m not a member of the “Flog ‘em and Hang ‘em” brigade, but yes, robust, high-profile sanctions against the individuals involved, well publicised, so that there is no excuse for not knowing that they will get caught (also mumbles about “regular mandatory training”)

And this is why I have little faith that ‘human in the loop’ will be an effective safeguard for algorithmic output. Because even when the tech display is clearly wrong, people will believe it over the actual realities happening right in front of them

History - The Charterhouse
A medieval monastery rising from the devastation of the Black Death, a grand Tudor mansion with aristocratic owners where royalty held court, and finally, a pioneering 400-year-old charity. Our story is one of faith, turmoil, and hospitality.

In fact by the time the quantum issue is revealed it may be that it is already been a problem for a while we just haven't seen it and we will be retrospectively, and urgently, fixing the problem. I think the problem will be far larger than the AI issue at least medium term

With all the concern about AI cyber security issues people seem to have completely forgotten about the upcoming issue of quantum computing and the impact it's going to have on encryption..... Note that whilst you're seeing the issues with AI in real time- the quantum issue will appear suddenly

As expected, now public info: the legal contention re: the TCN which the Home Office issued to Apple under the Investigatory Powers Act, ordering Apple to disable end-to-end encryption/Advanced Data Protection for UK users is, as we suspected might happen, going to drag on well into 2027.
