More flyers from Dennis Giffords 'Ace' newsletter, for shops, events and Zines

David McDonald @davidmcdonald.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

This is a very cool find! An original flyer advertising the opening of the first Forbidden Planet shop in London. It came with Dennis Giffords Ace newsletter in summer 1978, so this is possibly one of the first printings of Brian Bolland's iconic image.

A cool little curio from Giffords 'Ace' newsletter. It's a clipping from IPC magazines in-house newspaper, 'IPC News', featuring @2000ad.bsky.social editor Steve MacManus and Women's Realm craft editor Irene Bell with the pattern to make a Gronk soft toy from Strontium Dog!

An interesting find. Possibly Judge Dredd's first appearance in North America! It's French language and apparently published in Quebec in 1980.

The return of Lawless in the Dredd Megazine is great! I know I have said it before, but I do see a lot of Paddy Brennan's style in Winslades art. Pictured is a DPS by Winslade- like one of Brennans famous DPS from the old Dandy and Beano annuals It also has a nice feature on Doomlord too!

Here's something I was not aware of- a magazine reprinting the Judge Dredd newspaper strip in the US! Comic Revue was a continuation of the great Menomonee Falls Gazette and Dredd appeared in at least issues 76-80. Anyone have any more information? Buy Hibernia comics here www.hiberniacomics.com

Continuing on the Wizard appreciation, from Wizard, 1976. A wonderful page by Carlos Ezquerra, you can see his signature on the top right panel, slightly obscured by text.

I'm still amazed Wizard isn't better remembered. It really had a great mix of content, and some great art. As good, if not better than its contemporaries. Pictured are covers by Carlos Ezquerra and Jeff Bevan

A recent pickup, I had never heard of before. Its tabloid, 20 pages with well written newspaper style articles on comics up to the fifties. No author named that I can see, but there is an article on Phil Clarke and Denis Gifford is mentioned, it does feel like Gifford production. Nice curio.

I have been asked about our next book in the 'Fleetway Files' series. It is titled 'Glory Knight' and it should be out in autumn. Drawn by the great John M Burns- Glory Knight is a fun, action adventure time travel tale, that will fit well into the Fleetway Files series. www.hiberniacomics.com

I'm on a reread of the later Eagles that I haven't read in literally decades. Plenty of ads for Roy and the humour comics, but very few for 2000 AD, which made this one stick out a little. It's an ad for Swifty's Return from Feb 1989 by Milligan and Hewlett. Buy comics here- www.hiberniacomics.com
