Jazz OTD: This is a terrific album, but I mostly like featuring Tom Varner's "Jazz French Horn" - recorded October 8-9, 1985 - to juxtapose the title and cover with those for Andrew Hill's "Compulsion!!!!!" With Jim Snidero (as), Kenny Barron (p), Mike Richmond (b), and Victor Lewis (d). #jazzsky

Jazz OTD: It's hard to pick the best of Andrew Hill's uniformly excellent 1960s Blue Note recordings, but "Compulsion!!!!!" - recorded October 8, 1965 - is certainly among the most memorable, for the intensity of the compositions and its varied instrumentation. The remarkable closing track. #Jazzsky

Wow, f*** this guy. Like David Brooks but more aggressively wrong-headed www.nytimes.com/2026/10/06/o...
From the unlettered pen of Thomas Edsall:

The gender gap is a relatively simple comparison of the differences between men and women in their votes for Democrats or Republicans, or the different levels of support for such policy issues as military and welfare spending.

In the case of women in particular, the intragender gap is more subtle. But before going there, let me register a note of caution and frustration.

In comparison with scholarship on, say, voting or polarization, a disproportionate share of academic work that might provide objective analysis of gender and politics for a lay writer like me is riddled by advocacy in place of research. Fortunately, much of the work on hypermasculinity and femininity, while sometimes jargony, does not suffer these evidentiary weaknesses, with claims often backed up by polling and other data.

This conversation between the Times's John Guida and Reason magazine's Stephanie Slade is way too boring and free from anything resembling original insight to be worth reading it in its entirety, but I enjoyed seeing her take every chance to throw shade at JD Vance. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/o...
Most Americans really do want to find a way to share their country peacefully with their neighbors even if they disagree. Most Americans really do believe that everyone deserves equal treatment under law. Most Americans were horrified by the excesses of wokeness as well as the white nationalism that has emerged out of the dark corners of the internet and now finds expression from more mainstream voices such as JD Vance, Eric Schmitt and Bo French.Guida: Can the Republican Party emerge from Trumpism to become fusionist again? It seems a long way from that right now, no?

Slade: It has drifted a long way, yes. And Trump’s current heir apparent, Vice President Vance, is an open proponent of anti-fusionist, Dissident Right ideas. So I don’t see this intellectual divide having a clean resolution anytime soon. But I do think it’s a live debate, and those who count fusionists out have jumped to a premature conclusion.

I am again struck at the number of Noh plays about human trafficking. Today's find, Jinen koji, is about a girl (boy) who brings a kimono to a temple to get it blessed, unravelling the story. Hagoromo is also like this, with a feathered cloak as stolen passport of a celestial being. Heartbreaking.
