It's the inability to look at the evident failure of various initiatives over the years that is the worry - these are ideologues, and not practical people. It's the same blind spot with Thatcher - decades of evidence that some policies were disastrous, but still they use her as a touchstone.

Anybody truly English would know that "doth become" is much later, linguistically - more like Shakepeare's time (which is where they nicked it from). Plus the tapestry, I believe, is annotated in Latin - so they'd need "Kemi princeps fit" 😉

Well, to be fair, you need to be knocking on to remember it as an adult. I was at uni when she came to power, so started my working life a year or two in. All that "greed is good"/ "no such thing as society" guff made a lot of people a lot of money, but we can now see at what cost ...

Not only that, but the evidence of her "legacy" is all around us, and so many of today's problems had their roots in her policies, that it's undeniable how bad she was for the country. Pretending otherwise is a pretty silly look, quite frankly.

Exposes the idiocy of the concept: try to kill someone, fail, and take them to hospital, when the logic of what you are doing would dictate that you should just stick her out the back by the bins ...

The big reforms Burnham outlined are interlinked. There will be no viable expansion of the social state without Brexit being resolved. To embed the UK's long-term relationship with the EU electoral reform is necessary to reduce minority disruption. Equally, for enabling devolution to work.

There will be consequences - namely that they will grow up to be normal, balanced individuals, and not some radicalised imbecile.

He's absolutely right that there is two-tier policing - one tier is occupied by people who have broken the law (and, entertainingly, filmed themselves doing it in some spectacularly stupid cases), and the other by people who probably haven't.

The assumption that someone's potential criminality can be assessed simply from ethnicity is one of the most bizarre features of the right-wing mentality. It captures public discourse within seconds, despite being something that a five-year-old would see through immediately ... weird.

Credit where it's due - it's quite difficult to maintain a veneer of total imbecility 24/7. Most people who give it a go fail by accidentally being right about something every now and then. I think we should be more respectful of the sheer effort that these two put into life ...

I'm a liberal snowflake, but don't agree with this type of thing. All creations (art, literature, TV, etc) are products of their time, and offer valuable insights into how society and culture has changed, and the reasons for those changes. It's damaging to lose that, in my view.

My wife worked at the BBC back in the 80s/90s, and once met Michael Palin lost in a corridor somewhere, and accompanied him to the exit, and agrees with your assessment! We've seen him speak a couple of times over the years and, again, he comes over as very affable.

The only way to defeat the extreme right is through left-wing politics. Centrism just enables and encourages fascism through appeasement, collaboration with oligarchs and propping up a neoliberal economic system that has failure built-in.

Liz Truss doesn't know the difference between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea. She knocked £425bn off the value of pension fund assets. She thinks Tony Blair set up the Bank of England. And major companies pay her £80,000 a speech for her insights on politics and economics.

I'm slightly too young for the full "Beatlemania", but I remember the end of it from the late 60s, and boys (certainly at my school) were far too cool to be in to anything seen as mainstream - only when it has been superseded can you claim that it's now an interesting thing to follow ... 😉

As Sir Ken Robinson always said, we are set up to penalise mistakes and non-conformism, both in education and business, whereas we only really learn and develop if mistakes and differences are understood to be part of that process. Otherwise many kids are simply put off the whole deal and give up.

"Clever" doing a bit of heavy lifting there - cunning perhaps, shifty for sure, and possessed of a sort of streetwise cocksureness, but Farage is not generally considered an intellectual heavyweight, and being brighter than Tice is probably a taxonomic boundary.

Also notable that many of the areas with the largest non-white contingent also happen to be the most deprived. I suspect that if the population was entirely white but simply poor, they would be getting the same treatment from the Trusses of this world, but not being white makes a handy "category".

I live less than half an hour outside London, and hardly ever see a non-white face. Take a bus into town and you go through very different areas, but geographically restricted. So yes, some areas have a non-white majority but they are small. There's no "cultural domination" in a widespread sense.
