It's classism. Gentry (like the quoted Natalie Wynn) hate being confronted by those they see as their lessers and hate seeing other gentry confronted too (their status should put them above that!). So any angry demo is automatically bad even if historically it's an incredibly effective tactic.

Two-panel meme from Office Space where two consultants named Bob are discussing their layoffs. In the original scene, they discovered an employee was fired, but nobody told him. He kept working because a payroll glitch kept sending him paychecks. Instead of telling him he was fired, they fixed the payroll glitch so he would stop getting paid.

Panel 1: The two Bobs are labeled "Bluesky Safety and Moderation". They discuss what's going on.

Bob 1: "Trans users are filing lots of reports of hate speech."

Bob 2: "So we just went ahead and fixed the problem."

Offscreen person: "Greaaat. So the harassers have been banned."

Panel 2: The Bobs continue and explain what they did, matter-of-factly and confidently.

Bob 1: "Well just a second there. We, uh…we FIXED the PROBLEM. We muted their reports and threatened to suspend them, so the problem will just work itself out naturally."

Bob 2: "We always like to avoid confrontation whenever possible. The problem is solved from our end."

What's funny is that you could easily turn it around but we don't even think like this. "The fascists in charge would put all of you in the gas chambers (and live-stream the whole ordeal) but THIS is what upsets you the most? Protestors demanding an end to genocide?" NOBODY even gets that far.

It's not just classism, of course, but that's one of the main drivers of the kind of pearl clutching nonsense every time a progressive darling has to face even mild confrontation.

People are taking the streets now from France and Spain to New York City and Arizona—against police, against ICE, against gentrification, against ethnic cleansing and genocide. All of these are elements of a system that treats us as expendable. Find each other and resist. crimethinc.com/meltice

A lot of people really ultimately have the ideology of "society isn't perfectly calibrated right now but with a few small adjustments we can make it mostly optimal without having to drastically overhaul how I personally live." And I'm sadly the person who's going "LOL okay good luck with that"

Local governments, and the gentry who control them, do not arm, pay and equip local police because they're afraid of them. They do it because they're afraid of the public. Cops are a useful, if sometimes unruly, force for maintaining their power. They were shouting "fund the police" for a reason.

This exactly. Also, from long experience dealing with local governments, they have plenty of power over the police (nyc mayor in particular is one of the single most powerful local officials in the country) but choose not to use it because cops are useful to them and the gentry like crackdowns.

Seeing lots of people go well Mamdani can't do anything about the NYPD because they won't obey him and you do see how this makes your entire political project a joke right? Like if that's true then you just spent all of your time electing a hostage Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

Wow it's almost like there was a reason why pro-Palestinian protestors were demanding Mamdani fire the fucking NYPD police commissioner. There is some real "we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas" energy from camp "Mamdani never does anything wrong" these days.

Protestors confront Zohran Mamdani as he comes out for his press conference.

He said that ICE sped out of the hospital. He did not note that the NYPD cleared the way for them.

Today is a rare day where Twitter has more useful information than this website on a very important issue, so let's collate some of the ongoing discussions. 🧵 Here are the words straight from the mouth of a student organizer who went from interning for Mamdani to protesting him on the streets:
Wow. A student organizer leading protests against Zohran Mamdani tonight reveals that she previously interned for him.

Now she’s leading chants against the very politician she once worked for, accusing him of prioritizing his own political advancement over the people and movements that helped bring him to power.

She delivers an ultimatum: The protests can stop when Mamdani stops the sale of stolen Palestinian land in NYC and abolishes the CUNY Board of Trustees, which advances Israel’s interests within the nation’s largest urban public university system.

But she makes clear that she doesn’t expect him to deliver. In her view, Mamdani has become just another politician who makes promises to movements and then fails to meet their demands once in office.

What makes her testimony particularly significant is that she isn’t someone who opposed Mamdani from the beginning. She worked for him. She believed enough in his political project to participate in it. Now she’s publicly confronting him.

Her speech speaks to a broader frustration among people who placed their hopes in electoral politics as a vehicle for advancing Palestinian liberation. For some, the experience hasn’t strengthened their faith in political institutions. It has deepened their distrust.

("Safe" tbc, in the electoral sense, districts the Dems don't regard as competitive. Their safety for our actual lives and communities is a very different matter).

Never ever, ever venerate politicians. Any of them. For any reason. It will never work out well and encourages some of the worst traits in both individuals and the wider culture. This seems obvious, but charisma, propaganda and media all work for a reason.

So, from long experience: revering individual figures in politics and organizing is always a catastrophic mistake. Every last time, no matter who it is or what they've done. At best it cultivates an unhealthy dynamic for all parties involved. At worst it creates an environment ripe for abuse.

Lived here for 20+ years and this stereotype ain't true. The gentry here are awful, as they are elsewhere too. Asheville also has no shortage of working folks — especially trans working class folks — and very active mutual aid and radical groups. The solidarity after Helene didn't come from nowhere.

Whenever I hear "experts" used ambiguously, I always assume it's folks with an axe to grind. I think of how Robert Putnam spent most of Bowling Alone talking about a loss of community but ignored labor conditions entirely and complained about children born out of wedlock. It was published in 2000.
