Can sabotage be an act of care? A way to build the future? In our new @antipodeonline.bsky.social article, Eric Kioko & I introduce the Sabotage Matrix, a tool to rethink infrastructure sabotage as both destructive and constructive. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
A 2x2 matrix titled "Sabotage Matrix", showing the material and immaterial effects of infrastructure sabotage, divided into destructive (left) and constructive (right) axes.

Top-left (Q1): Labeled "Destructive material effects" with a photo of a partially dismantled dam.

Top-right (Q2): Labeled "Constructive material effects" with a photo of a dislodged water pipe on dry earth.

Bottom-left (Q3): Labeled "Destructive ideational effects", with the quote: "We are saying [sabotage] is good, because it has made the things that were in darkness to come into the light."

Bottom-right (Q4): Labeled "Constructive ideational effects", with the quote: "The reason for us being included, it is because of the destructions they have seen."

The vertical axis is labeled "Material" (top) and "Immaterial" (bottom), and the horizontal axis is labeled "Destructive" (left) and "Constructive" (right).

TIME FOR SOCIALISM: DISPATCGES FROM A WORLD ON FIRE, 2016-2021 by Thomas Piketty (2021 [2020]; translated by Kristin Couper from VIVEMENT LE SOCIALISME! CHRONIQUES, 2016-2020)

World-renowned economist Thomas Piketty has documented many of the recent political events that have shaken the planet, always arguing for a more equitable world. This collection brings together those articles and is prefaced by an extended introductory essay in which he argues that the time has come to support an inclusive and expansive conception of socialism as a counterweight against the hypercapitalism that defines our current economic ideology. These essays offer readers an accessible way to understand the struggle against inequalities and tax evasion, in favour of a globalization more respectful of work and the environment.PIRATE ENLIGHTENMENT, OR THE REAL LIBERTALIA by David Graeber (2022 [2019]; originally published as LES PIRATES LUMIÈRES)

A provocative rereading of the European Enlightenment, by situating its roots in the thought of precolonial indigenous societies, the pirates of the Caribbean in early modernity who relocated to the northeast coast of Madagascar and interacted with and learned from indigenous Malagasy people, the peoples who moved back and forth across the Indian Ocean of what woukd become Indonesia, India, Southeast Asia, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Gulf, and the east coast of Africa. Graeber also centres indigenous Malagasy women this materialist history of debates about democracy and property in the European salons of the Enlightenment.LESS IS MORE: HOW DEGROWTH WILL SAVE THE WORLD by Jason Hickel (2020)

Our planet is in trouble. But how can we reverse the current crisis
and create a sustainable future? The answer is: degrowth.

LESS IS MORE is the wake-up call we need. By shining a light on
ecoloaical breakdown and the system that's causing it, Hickel
shows how we can bring our economy back into balance with
the living world and build a thriving society for all. This is our chance to change course, but we must act now.UNDER A WHITE SKY: CAN WE SAVE THE NATURAL WORLD IN TIME? by Elizabeth Kolbert (2021)

Kolbert tells of her encounters with the bioloaists trying to save the world's rarest fish, the engineers who are turning carbon emissions to stone, the researchers trying to develop a 'super coral, and the physicists contemplating shooting tiny diamonds into the stratosphere to cool the Earth.

Elizabeth Kolbert is one of the most important popular writers on the environment. Here she investigates the immense challenges humanity faces as we scramble to reverse, in a matter of decades, the effects we've had on the natural world and asks - can we save the natural world in time?
