This is an incredibly niche #biblenerd question. Is Paul Hanson’s depiction of the internal Jewish conflict in the immediate post-exilic period (i.e. zadokite claims to power) a relatively consensus view? @mattthiessen.bsky.social ?

Melanie Klein in 1921. “The idea of enlightening children in sexual matters is steadily gaining ground.” 🫠 “This ensures that wishes, thoughts and feelings shall not - as happened to us - be partly repressed and partly endured under a burden of shame and nervous suffering.” 😢

Gillian Rose summarizing Hegel, "The Gospel does not mean the preaching of religious faith … it refers to the way in which religion offers no political guidance to people. The Christian religion has always been inherently unable to offer rational political guidance." Well, dang.

Dear Marxists or critical historians, Finally working my way through Capital v.1. From a contemporary perspective it is striking to see how closely Marx ties money to gold. Recommend one text that engages both Marxism (doesn’t have to be Marxist itself) and the break with the gold standard.

So, as far as I can figure it, collectively, a change in the bad rarely ushers in the better. Resistance to the worse is often in the name of the previous bad. And while steady incremental change is best it will not be achieved by incrementalism. Did I miss anything?

Seeing how Epstein was viewed as hub for discussing any manner of topic, a person of 'interest' to people who we thought we respected, I can't help but think of John Howard Yoder and the exploration of ethics beyond what the 'common' person can understand and handle. Anyone else getting that vibe?

Mark Carney regularly says he ‘knows how the world works.’ While true this never sat right with me. Adorno put it into words, “Anyone who knows the business too well forgets to know it for what it is, his capacity for differentiation deserts him, leaving the threat of a lapse into barbarism.”
