It is Mean Girls Day And that means it is time to post the famous photo with Hamilton's own Dan Jelly walking as an extra in the background! Before he was making posters, he was on them! @jellybros.bsky.social

Thanks, Ari. It's difficult to get back into. I'm a different person & painter than I was 4 years ago. I'll probably rework/refinish a lot of it. But I think it still has something to say about the times we find ourselves in.

Me too. It's a bit daunting. But it feels like the time is right.

The big painting was a combo of 2 of the small works from the series.

"Higher Ground (New Day Rising)", oil on canvas, 11x14", 2022- $850. A painting of a toy soldier atop a crumpled Pabst beer can, on one knee, taking aim with his rifle. The sky is bright, morning sun breaking through clouds.

"Strategic Target (Night Falls)", oil on canvas, 11x14", 2022- $850. A painting of toy soldiers capturing a Fisher-Price Chatterphone against a dramatic sunset.

This one was started in 2022 and abandoned. I knew what it needed but lacked the courage to get back to it. The "Backyard Apocalypse" works started explosions, but I edited them out as the series matured. Time to finish it.

A large oil painting (3x6 feet) of a green plastic toy soldier on one knee taking aim with a rifle. It's on a crumpled Pabst Blue Ribbon beer can in the grass against an orange sunset. The can has a bullet hole in it. The can and soldier are at eye level, as though the viewer is lying on the grass looking straight ahead. Goldfish are flying about the sky like little putti. I'm in the midst of adding a towering nuclear mushroom cloud in the background. There's a black cat walking up to the painting from behind and beside it.

Scale is just a state of mind... and brush size. I just pulled out an abandoned painting from 3 yrs ago that's 3x6 feet. Big brushes.

Thank you muchly, Ms. Nomer.

Almost all "crime in X city is out of control" stories can be quickly checked & debunked these days. Crime stats are always spiky so law & order types can always point to the highest peak of a chart, but crime in general is trending down.

Just in general, if you vote for the state to go after any minority group in the populace, you're an absolute asshole.

A self portrait pencil drawing. I am facing the camera, wearing a thick grey hoodie, black ball cap and a wool scarf over my mouth & nose. My eyes are wide open. The scarf has a capital U on it over my mouth.

A painting of a view of the maple tree & the tree of heaven behind it in my backyard with 2 red brick houses behind. The house on the left is obscured by branches & leaves, and in the bottom left corner vines cover the fence. The fence continues along the bottom edge to the right corner covered by greenery. Behind the fence is a taupe coloured vinyl sided shed in my neighbour's yard.

A painting of an apartment building, tall warm grey with columns of small windows & balconies against a cool blue sky. The right side of the building is facing the sunset, glowing warm yellow. In front of & blocking out most of the building is a large, green, leafy tree that gets darker towards the bottom. A red-leafed dogwood is in the foreground. A power line reflecting sunlight bisects the painting horizontally. At the top left there's a hint of an overhanging maple bough.

Hamilton continues to do a thing that Toronto gave up on in 2022: Open Streets. I went out last Sunday to check it out, and it’s wonderful. seanmarshall.ca/2026/10/03/o...

Open Streets in Hamilton

Hamilton hosts a popular and successful Open Streets event every year along King Street East. In 2027, Toronto should strive to be at least as ambitious.

Continually seeing phrases like "these ghouls should never know a day of peace for the rest of their lives" & then 3 yrs later "...out with his new book "My name is Stephen: A Spiritual Journey Towards Redemption", ladies & gentlemen, let's welcome Stephen Miller to the Today Show." (applause)
