People near death sometimes have visions of long-deceased relatives, lovingly waiting for them on the Other Side. They see what they see. But people who use AI-made "deadbots" see a vision according to what they've told the AI to provide. That's a difference I explore here.

More & more I find myself treating LLMs as commodities. Some Perplexity for this, a bit of Claude for that, Grok now, NotebookLM later. With so many flooding the zone I don't feel loyal to one over another. Am I unusual?

Is there any reason for Senate Dems to vote for keeping the gov't open? Shouldn't they hold out for some concessions, like restored NIH and USAID funding? Not seeing how a shutdown is worse than letting Trump's rampage continue

I am with you on "CU has failed its duties" but "CU had it coming" comes too close to justifying a gov't whose acts are far worse than circulating vile leaflets on a campus. My 2 thoughts are 1 CU must repair its breach AND 2 no one should find Fed action is reasonable

David Berreby @davidberreby.bsky.social · 09/03/2025
I fail to see the justice in, say, scotching the plans of a postdoc to study cancer at CU because some admins failed in their duties. I don't see how any misconduct or incompetence at CU justifies the disappearing of a green card holder by ICE.

David Berreby @davidberreby.bsky.social · 09/03/2025
I don't defend CU or thug protests. As you've said, we should be capable if holding 2 ideas at once about all this. CU should act. But this gov't cure is worse than the disease.

As robots appear more frequently in ordinary lives, there are going to be times when people bash the machines. And times when robots bash people. Here’s what I think such incidents tell us about human-robot relations. (Spoiler: Nothing to do with uprisings and dystopias.)

Also, to be specific here (because it does matter) DeepSeek is *not* open source — it’s open _weights_ with the difference being that you can run it on your own machine with the code, but you don’t know what material exactly it was trained on. An important distinction, worth emphasizing.

Dynamically update scene graphs as an agent explores and moves around the world, in order to create robots which can function in human environments like homes. This creates a carrier-relation scene graph (CRSG) as the underlying representation, which lets it find and move to moved targets.

Some forms of concern about #AI are, in effect, toxic care — that is, care that serves the carer’s prejudices/self-interest/vanity while doing no good to the (supposedly) cared-for.

Whoops, sorry, I meant to type "engage WITHOUT the pearl clutching." But that's kind of a Twitter/X way to phrase it. I apologize. Point is: Socrates was right about writing's downsides! But he saw no upsides, and that's what seems absurd to us now.

He saw a new technology as a moral threat, when it simply represented change. Today we find it absurd to despise writing's effects on the mind. Our descendants will likely see AI aversion in the same way. We might despise them for that, but what will they care?

David Berreby @davidberreby.bsky.social · 29/12/2024
That's what Socrates said about writing (in the Phaedrus, around 275b). And no doubt what people said about compasses (our sense of direction!) & horses (we'll be so feeble when we don't walk everywhere!). Humanity gains skills and loses others as time passes. Not a moral issue.

I think it's more likely to give people a shot who could never afford a coach. A LLM can't replace the many benefits of a human, but if you don't have $150 or $450 or $1,000 a week to spare on your hobby, this gives you a way in.
000
David Berreby @davidberreby.bsky.social · 29/12/2024
I too find feedback aspect of LLMs is really useful for learning things and sorting through my own thoughts. Way better results come from asking "how can I do this better?" than "do this for me." Starting to worry tho about the temptation to reduce human advice-seeking, with all its risks & rewards.
021
David Berreby @davidberreby.bsky.social · 29/12/2024
Personalized feedback is a huge advantage! It's the reason people have always sought out human teachers instead of just reading the textbook. (And, yes, I know a LLM is no substitute for a teacher. But it can give an enlightening response to your exact product.

Yeah, I get how that's repugnant. But we're all embedded in a system that assigns a $$ value to everything. Not protecting artists is effectively telling them their work is worth nothing. Yes, they'll make art anyway, but that message is not right.
