AI Is an Anti-Primary Source Machine
Real voices from the past are threatened by chatbots designed to amplify — and ultimately become — the loudest voices in the room.

Heads-up to any fellow educators who use The American Yawp in their courses; they changed the chapter structure and content over the summer. They do have the old ("First Edition") versions available: www.americanyawp.com/index-first-...

Screenshot of Captain Murphy from Sealab 2021 saying "You got any stuff that doesn't suck?" posted as a reaction meme to the quoted post, which showcases the abstract of a paper claiming to explore how LLM hallucinations may be used as part of "critical confabulation" to make up for gaps in the archival record.

This suggests to me that one of the reasons that AI videos, in particular, are so bad and zany is not only the inherent random jank of "AI," but also that there are no intermediate people (actors, set designers, directors, etc.) who might push back against the weird ideas of these new auteurs.

This is redolent of "establish[ing] a student loan debt forgiveness program for Pell Grant recipients who start a business that operates for three years in disadvantaged communities" except worse in a lot of ways.

@perusall.com In the new grouping system in Perusall, is there a way to have Perusall automatically assign students to random groups for each of the library items? The new group management seems very counterintuitive. I do not want to make "group sets" and apply "group sets" to dozens of items.

@bandcamp.com Do you have a policy regarding the hosting and selling of AI-generated content? I've noticed several accounts that appear to be selling AI-generated "music" without explicitly labeling it as such.

New awareness campaign
A digital poster in the style of a World War II propaganda piece. Isolaed on a yellow background, a normal, squarish, 20-something guy with glasses is sitting working on a laptop. A ghostly figure of Hitler has his arm around the guy and is grinning and shaking a fist triumphantly looking at the laptop screen. On the lid of the laptop where an apple might otherwise be is an openAI logo, bright green, and dripping green ooze down the lid. Text on the poster, in combinations of sans-serif type and brush script reads:
Using Generative AI?
You’re prompting with Hitler!
GenAI is a Fascist Project!
Try using your brain instead
Don’t surrender your creativity to the tech billionaire’s control

I've been thinking that if LLMs existed in 1934, prompts asking about Reconstruction would probably elicit output trained largely on Dunning School writings and Birth of a Nation. Luckily modern LLMs can't reproduce such bias 🙃

I am in a Facebook group where people ridicule AI slop. Someone shared a Sora video in which Hitler was giving a TED Talk about how he was forced into World War II by the Poles & the Brits. I reported it & FB said it was not "hateful." Also, Sora apparently has no qualms producing vids with Hitler.

Are there any examples my academic followers on here know about of *student* resistance to the use of LLMs, among undergrads or graduate students?

Horrible. As a past recipient of a Fulbright scholarship, as well as an educator who has touted the Gilman scholarship to my own students (who tend to come from disadvantaged backgrounds) this really hits home.
