For starters, Democrats need to actually field a candidate against Mike Johnson, unlike the 2022 and 2024 campaigns when they let him run unopposed. The odds of unseating him will be long, but use the campaign to put him on defense and make our version of Pierre Poilievre sweat a little.

in the american system, the president may represent a national electorate but this does not imbue him with anything other than rhetorical power. he must still negotiate with congress, which represents particular constituencies, and heed the courts, who determine what the law is.

Even *if* you accept Stephen Miller’s (textually, historically, and morally indefensible) claim that undocumented immigrants are not entitled to due process, you’d *still* need due process to ensure that the individuals at issue are, in fact, undocumented. His argument fails even on its own terms.
