Me: ugh, modern landmark architecture is just rich people showing off how much money they have. What happened to restrained displays of class and taste? 18th Century Scotland: PINEAPPLES!!!
The Dunmore House Pineapple. It’s a Georgian building that looks like, well, a pineapple. It was made in 1761 when pineapples were some of the most fashionable objects on the planet, and, honestly, there isn’t much more to it than that.

Don't normally process my #AmperSand shots to black and white, but without the sun shining this was almost there already. And I liked the dog and their human.
A black and white photo. A white ampersand made of shells is on a sandy beach. Some dark rocks behind the ampersand point off towards the sea, where a labrador and their human are silhouetted against the water's edge.

It’s my birthday so, as the tradition seems to be developing, I grabbed my camera and headed off to have a little explore by myself in the dawn light. Down by the docks in Leith, this time. I’m really going to miss those visiting yellow giants when they’re gone. #photography #leith
A huge shed sits on the dockside. Behind it, towering over everything else, are four enormous yellow structures. They’re jacket foundations, soon to be shipped off and submerged under the North Sea to support wind turbines. A crane cabin and part of its dark grey structure. Behind it is a little of angled yellow steel tubing, forming parts of some enormous tapering towers. They’re jacket foundations, soon to be shipped off and submerged under the North Sea to support wind turbines. A shiny black metal-clad tower sits on the leith dockside. It’s the Port Of Leith distillery, and its cladding reflects the golden light of the sunrise, behind us.Part of an old, rusting crane. You can see the name Stothert & Pitt, Bath, England formed as part of the structure. Clearly none of these elements have moved, in years.

No beach or #AmperSand action from me, today, but my sister and her son sent me these, which they made on the shore in Portishead! Whoop! In the words of the mighty Arlo Guthrie: “…And friends, they may think it’s a movement!”

...I think the Forth Road Bridge probably often misses out on peoples' attention because of its older and younger siblings on either side. But it's a handsome thing, actually, and I really like looking up under that veritable spaceframe of a deck from Port Edgar.
Looking up at the pale grey Forth Road Bridge against darker grey cloudy skies, from the south west. It's a classic suspension bridge design with quite an open road deck that admits a lot of sunlight in amongst the sea of structural members, at least when it's coming from the right angle!

Snaps from a quick jaunt over the Forth with the kidbots yesterday, for a little walk and a big lunch.
A bent tree trunk catches a tiny beam of sunlight falling into the otherwise shady glen in which it sits. Behind the tree, is a waterfall. Two kids traipse along a narrow path running across a steep hillside, looking over a small glen on their left. The flat Forth Valley is just visible in the distance, stretching away from us under cloudy skies.Looking up to the sky from under some trees, we see the sun shining out over the top of a big fluffy cloud. The cloud has a brightened edge. A slightly abstract photo of parts of two bridges, shot against a cloudy sky. Across the top of the frame is the structure supporting the deck of the Forth Road Bridge, all grey but with strong contrast from the sunshine which shines part way through the mass of structural elements. Down at the bottom of the frame, part of the red diamand-shaped central tower of the Forth Bridge is visible, in the distance.

No particular reason, but here's a photo I've always loved, which I see I took exactly ten years ago, today. I loved that flat. And that landing, and the stairs. And the parquet floor, gawd... that's one of the best things we've ever made. And Lyra. What a brilliant little cat she was.
A photo taken in a stairwell of a house. Sunlight shines through a doorway off frame to the left, and casts shadows onto the wall on the right of the frame. Before it gets there, though, it highlights a series of slim vertical rails and a wide balustrade on which tiptoes a small ginger and white cat, also rather beautifully highlighted by the low-angle sun. A woman is watching the cat, delighted. The landing is otherwise lit by the cool ambient daylight provided by a couple of square rooflights in the ceiling, but the warm colours of a maple parquet floor mirror the ginger tones of the little cat. It's just a glimpse of a residential landing, but it's a very happy one.

Woke earlier than I was happy with yesterday, so just grabbed the camera and strolled around the block in the hope of seeing something interesting. Not much in terms of pictures, to be honest, but I can’t pretend my neighbourhood isn’t full of nice moments!

The clear blue sky casts a very cool ambient light over everything, and water of the reflecting pool in the foreground mirrors it. No particular reason, but here are some rooflights and/or oculi, from the archive. A cancer support centre, an old bird house, a bank, and an art gallery. Three from Scotland, one from Germany. And honestly the third one isn’t actually American. Really. #Architecture
A view of a cutout in a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior. It’s lined by a square series of golden metallic panels to reflect of the light, but each of these is also perforated with a graphical pattern of triangular cutouts. This admits textured light through the panels into the interior but also means the reflected light becomes more textured too. Glazing below also features a series of linear frits, and the overall effect becomes a lovely series of gradually increasing graphical textures of light and colour, diffusing the view of the wooden interior.A view of a cutout in a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior.

A tiny open oculus at the top of this domed doocot/ dovecote admits daylight down into the interior, and that daylight catches the concentric horizontal bands which form the shelves on which birds would sleep.

It looks a bit like a slightly trippy vortex from an old black&white scifi show, perhaps.A view of a series of cutouts in a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior.

A neoclassical domed ceiling with a glimpse of some of the cornice and heavily decorated arches on the adjacent supporting walls. There’s a lot of ornate plasterwork all over it, and there are rich colours of red, white, blue, and gold.

The main dome, painted a deep blue, features a central circular oculus, but also a series of concentric rings of star-shaped rooflights, all admitting bright daylight.

The whole thing looks very, VERY American, but it’s actually the old main branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, in Edinburgh.A view of a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior.

A modern roof structure of incredibly thin but also very deep white-painted concrete fins, in radial lines and concentric circles, under a glazed roof, all spanning over a wide circular atrium in an art gallery. It’s a cloudy day outside so the daylight is completely diffuse, but it’s flooding into the atrium all the same, and the thin lines of the window glazing or bottom edges of the structural fins form dark edges in contrast against the bright sky.

Speaking from rehearsals for the tour Charlie Reid explained: “I support equality, and equality in marriage is part of that. It’s vital that gay people be given the same rights as straight people.”

Craig Reid added: “If you believe in equality, and you know that something is unequal, then you want to do something about it. It’s not doing anybody harm, it’s not lessening rights; it’s extending rights and that’s why we support it. We’re progressive people; we think that Scotland has to move forward, and equal marriage for gay and transgender people is part of that."
