I wish them a ton of luck but that just seems so un-Marvel. If Wacker is really empowered and able to shake the company up, great.

As I understand the 22nd Amendment: If he were to resign in the window you specify - Vance would serve slightly more than two years of the term, and thus he would be ineligible to serve more than one additional term. Do I have that right?

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

I am thrilled and proud beyond measure to support the amazing workers who create and design the games I and my loved ones have spent a lifetime playing. I implore everybody to sign the petition and signal boost the campaign as far and wide as we can!

Once again: If Dems do well in November, absolutely everyone should interpret it as a definitive statement that the US electorate rejected a disgusting smear campaign against trans people.

Ferrigno himself didn't really scare me. But Bruce Bixby's horrified face as he started to transform certainly gave me the heebie jeebies. Mister Rogers really made it a mission to make sure kids in the 70s weren't scared of characters in green makeup.

Alan Davis is always great, and I love him on the Legion. And the first few years of post-ZH Legion were nifty. Of course, I have Jeff Moy drawings of the three founders on my office wall, so I would say that. :)

Given the number of things that can go wrong, it's really a miracle that anything ever gets done. (True about storytelling and most anything people do, come to think of it.)

I read this at least five times before I ever read the comics. It's an incredible and candid look behind the scenes of one of the biggest comics debacles of the 90s. If you want to REALLY see all the pressures that affect creative works, read this. You'll come away with new respect for the process

Sadly, Russ Heath had to rely on doing art commissions and on donations from @heroinitiative.bsky.social to survive in his later years. Roy Lichtenstein got four million dollars for blatantly stealing/swiping Heath's work -- Russ Heath got nothing. ...not even enough for a glass of wine.
Comic strip written and drawn by Russ Heath detailing his financial and medical problems late experienced late in life and how the Hero Initiative helped him in his time of need.

The strip was colored and lettered by Darwyn Cooke.

When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. One thing that makes me less optimistic about the human ability to learn is that more of our decision makers apparently haven’t learned Goodhart’s law yet. I’m probably gonna need to read John Dewey’s Democracy and Education again.

@musicologyduck.bsky.social - my high school students are still singing Hamilton songs and Philly just did a screening on Independence Mall. I do teach kids at an arts-based school and it is Philadelphia, so calibrate your evaluation of the evidence accordingly.

The feeling of understanding something that I didn’t understand, of taking that new insight and seeing how it ricochets off the ideas I already have, can be satisfying. It can make me happy. Other times, it’s just something I need to know to get on with my life and I just need to do the work.

Yeah, part of what I like about 1984 is seeing what DC was doing before they took the big swing at revamping with Crisis. I started in ‘89, right before the movie, when Aparo was still on BATMAN and Marv Wolfman came on for a few issues to introduce Tim Drake.

The Green Arrow backups are an added bonus. These books are dated in a good way. I get a very strong sense of the social climate of the time. I just finished a Moench story about racism and boxing. I think the first GA backup I read was a story about gun violence in tribute to John Lennon.

I’m reading as much of DC from 1984 as they have on their app and of all the stuff I hadn’t read before, Moench’s BATMAN and DETECTIVE are my favorites. I definitely prefer that interpretation of the character to the post-Miller version I started reading in 1989.

Someone could get at least a dissertation out of tracing the way Wealth of Nations got boiled down to a few paragraphs on Smith’s 3 laws of economics in history textbooks across the country. The last time I taught kids US history I read some excerpts from WoN, and talk about a game of telephone.

Philosophy of mind is where I thought my academic career would go - my undergrad senior thesis was on philosophy of AI! - and seeing where we are today I am glad I switched gears. Not that studying democratic theory as a philosopher and a high school teacher has been relaxing during this century!

And for some reason, every so often I wonder how the students stayed in school long enough to have the eccentric charismatic sub replacing a beloved teacher become the beloved teacher being replaced by an eccentric charismatic sub. Ah, contract negotiations.

There was an episode where the students made a video set to Timbuk3’s “The Future’s So Bright.” One day I lost my regular glasses and had to wear my prescription sunglasses for a week, so for that week I was the crazy teacher who wore dark glasses. (Things were not going great.)

After the first day he wanted to hear her opinion so she pointed out he had not written his aim on the board. The next day he came in and wrote AIM and proceeded to talk about the American Indian Movement. I do not know why this moment of pettiness stuck in my head for twenty plus years.

I watched this show enough to have a few very specific memories, especially since I am now a HS teacher. There is an expectation that teachers write the objective on the board for each class. At least once a year ai think of the ep where a former girlfriend was assigned to observe Mr. Moore.

I am teaching high school students, so right now I am so sick of LLMs I have little energy for much deeper thought. The financial structure of these companies also gives me the heebie-jeebies. So every once in a while I need to slap myself in the face with someone describing the useful parts.

I think the idea that Kirk has already tried to force himself back on the bridge of the Enterprise once is important. That said, the subsequent movies don’t really address this or anything else from TMP so it’s left as subtext in the viewer’s mind anyway.

… sympathy for being placed in an impossible position by a Lucas who didn’t want to see things through and a Disney that wanted to turn Lucasfilm into another Marvel without providing the necessary support. That said, I don’t think she was good at that job.

This. This is the biggest gut punch in any Batman story I've seen. The path not taken, almost in reach, and then snatched away by criminals once again.

I do think a lot of the plots I’m reading in issues from 1984 would take a 4-6 issue arc today, but I also feel like each plot beat would have more space to develop. But whether it takes more time to nail down the condensed version or the more expansive version, I am not qualified to say.

Dave Thomer @davethomer.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Yeah, thinking and storytelling still takes time. And would I be correct in my belief that in 1984 editors would just be starting to add in the logistical work involved with line-wide events, with DC moving forward on planning for CRISIS? And now it’s more than just one event a year.
100
Dave Thomer @davethomer.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
No, please do correct me. I drew a bad conclusion from credits like the one above. (Maybe assistants got credit on letters pages, which I don’t see on the app.) More books published & more editorial infrastructure seem to go together, but maybe that doesn’t change the workload for any one editor.

But if Wein had other things beyond the editorial workload as obstacles to writing more and writing on time, well, as you say, it’s a shame for everyone he couldn’t find ways past them.
