Look into the post-WWII serial killer epidemic. You may find some applicable overlaps there.

I’d be curious to know why. I wonder if the reason is because of your resumé. On paper, you tick a lot of boxes that people like her assume means you are with them. Veteran, ex-cop, knows stuff about military history, vaguely Eastern-European ethnicity with personal ties to the USA, etc.

True, but in most cases what they really hate is an entirely-fake political party that was created, whole-cloth, from the imaginations of various Fox News folks. They rarely hate the real party’s actual policies, statements, or actions. It’s all weird fantasy stuff.

One should always remember to include Tyson’s title when mentioning him in articles. Not the boxing thing. The “convicted rapist” thing.

Real trailblazer in GOP politics here. He was the #1 republican in the country for years. Also, child molester. Like I said - real trailblazer. Totally set the GOP vibe for the years to come. (After getting out of prison, he was still welcome at GOP events and feted in GOP circles. Not subtle).

FWIW - he’s fine with white special ops guys having beards. He’s not *really* anti-beard. Just … one particular category of beard-havers.

Buried in this story - the PDX cops used a Flock-style camera. They indeed have them, just not under the Flock name so they are not getting all the anti-Flock activism right now. Same thing though. We are all being surveilled by our cops every time we leave our house, and there’s no oversight.

Single-focus education has bad outcomes. The reason so many doctors’ practices go bankrupt is because they don’t feel the need to study things outside their scope, like business and accounting. The reason so many pilots fall for right-wing conspiracy theories is basically the same. It’s just bad.

Gotta disagree there - no way in Hell could I have come up with something as cool as a musical (I hate musicals) romance story (I hate romance stories) involving a prince (ugh), that actually was GOOD. Credit where credit’s due: you created something fantastic.

I’m apparently at the age where I can blow out my knee by sleeping wrong. It hurts so much I’m considering bailing on class today so I can hide under my cat and gobble Vicodin like it was slightly-chalkier Pez.

trump has mostly just ignored the courts, or acted swiftly-enough to render them moot. And as far as Congress’ cash superpower - they fold almost every time, but if they do try to assert this power for real - where’s all that Venezuelan oil money again? How about the tariff revenues?
100
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
So, the courts have no direct power and Congress is useless. Both have nothing but soft power, like giving orders to lower courts, or “the power of the purse.” Both of which are hugely-inconvenient for a rogue president, but aren’t actually crippling.
110
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The best Congress has ever done, the best they are ever likely to do, is threaten Nixon enough to get him to voluntarily leave on his own terms. It would be an empty threat now. It perhaps was an empty threat even then. Regardless - nobody will ever take it seriously from now on. It’s dead.
100
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The courts have no cops, aside from token personal security. No prisons. No (and let’s be blunt about this needed resource for compelling a rogue president) soldiers. Congress won’t impeach & remove. Probably ever. For any president - not just trump or republicans. Impeachment is just too hard.
100
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
We find ourselves in rather odd times, with an Executive Branch that cares little for what they “should” do. So anyway, the courts ordered the White House to let the press back in. The WH shrugged and ignored them. And … well … what can the court actually do about it? Strongly-worded letters?
100
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
In many cases, this means the same thing. Can’t convict a person of a crime if the Supreme Court says no courts are allowed to. Ditto for civil lawsuits. In lots of other cases though … compliance is more “traditional” than concrete reality. This almost never matters. Historically.
100
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Ultimately, the only power the Supreme Court has is the ability to give orders to lower courts. Everything from judicial review to injunctions to contempt proceedings hinges on it. They don’t really strike down laws - they just make it known that courts will not honor those laws.

There’s gotta be a term for this. “Pretend restraint” seems to be the basic concept though. Sort of a Catch-22. The power exists as long as you don’t try to use it, but the instant you try to use it the system will remove that power. It exists as long as it doesn’t exist. Self-extinguishing.
030
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I think it’s simply self-defense. As long as they pretend to have the power and not use it, the president is likely to keep pretending to have the power as well. Ultimately, if they DID enjoin him, well, trump might just ignore them. That would be the end of it, since Congress won’t impeach.

What, in your opinion, would be “far left” as opposed to mainstream left, center-left, centrist, etc? It seems like the right is more clearly-defined. Pretty much everyone on both sides can agree on who is center-right vs. far-right and so on, but there seems to be no such consensus for the left.

Fascists are often so buffoonish in so many ways that it’s easy to look at them and single out “the one thing” they did wrong, decide “well, of course we won’t do THAT,” and then proceed to do fascism again.

The difference between my false memory and someone like trump is that he’s extremely-chronic in this, often one-upping himself as he repeatedly re-writes his own brain for manipulation of the masses. TL;DR - trump made this up, but it’s now an honest 100% clear memory for him. Brains are weird.
120
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Is your MEMORY right? Do you clearly remember something happening that, objectively, did not? Almost everyone has a few of these. I remember seeing the first Star Wars in the theater as a kid, but the calendar proves this did not happen. A few minor memories were stitched together by my brain.
110
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Many of us do this to a much, much, much-lower extent. Pick a fad or event from your teen years. Parachute pants, a movie premier, an album release, whatever. Ask yourself what part you had in it. Now go ask your relatives, look up your yearbook, or otherwise fact-check yourself. Were you right?
110
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
So “watching 9/11 on TV like almost everyone else” becomes “getting hauled out of the rubble and personally escorted to safety by two elite firefighters.” But this isn’t a pure LIE. Not always. Not often, even. People like trump WANT this to be true so much that their brain MAKES it true.
120
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Most of us are mostly-boring most of the time. Insecure people (like the famously-insecure trump) worry that their role in the shared experience just isn’t memorable. Often, eight billion humans participated in “existing on that date,” so it’s assumed that having too minor of a role won’t cut it.
120
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Those universally-shared events - 9/11, the death of Lady Di, fashion trends, favorite popular bands - are a pre-loaded shared experience. We bond with people over them. Since the experience already happened, we only have to mention our role in it to speed-run the bonding ritual. But …
110
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
It’s a weird quirk of our brains that memories we construct for social reasons (aka: things we tell others, or things we use to bond with others) feel exactly as real as things that actually happen. One of the most-common examples are the “where were you when X happened?” questions.
110
Davethegreat @davethegreat.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Ok, here’s the thing about people with his type of psychology: he probably now believes this. Memory is a pretty crappy thing for all people (yes, including you), and it’s incredibly-malleable. When narcissists like trump construct these tales - they often make them retroactive, and “remember.”
