Exciting clouds this evening over South London. Plenty of altocumulus with virga. Highly photogenic in my opinion. There’s even a sundog in there somewhere.
Sky with mid-level cloud with smears of frozen precipitation falling underneath giving them a smudged appearance (virga). Trees in the foreground with low level sun. Closer view of mid-level cloudless with some like castles (altocumulus castellanus) with a smeared underside of falling ice crystals (virga)Sun shining through altocumulus perlucidis and with some virga and a sundog at 22° on the left

You can look at fog in a variety of ways, some more niche. The Reading observatory records atmospheric electricity; suspended water droplets absorb the ions that give the atmosphere its electrical conductivity, so the potential gradient near the Earth's surface rises.

Temperature wise, this year through the end of September has been well outside of reliable records for many southern parts of the UK. E.g. local to me it's over half a °C clear of the prior record for mean daily min, & over a °C clear for mean daily max. Huge margins for a 273-day mean.

Something is happening. What could it be? It’s clear isn’t it. We’re not going back to the climate of the 1980s or even the 1990s.

I saw the rain radar this morning around 07:00 and the supercell, in Gulf of Lyon, seemed to rotate with a front or derecho-like intense rain band towards the East. Certainly, there's a lot of energy with sea temp anomalies. Montpelier got absolutely drenched yesterday.

We had -6ºC min in that period in the Vantage Vue and I wonder if being on top of Streatham Hill that it's our limit and also being one foot in the heat island.

My impression of requirements for record lows are dry upper air, no clouds, no wind at ground level and deep snow. Many date records were lost in Scotland to advancing cirrus (trapping heat). The Shawbury min of -24ºC ish I think, was astounding at the time. Then, -27.2ºC at Braemar. Brrr! 🥶

I liked your article about the -20ºC record in East London. I suppose deep snow in the Lee Valley would do it with clear skies and continental (or polar air). I recall in Edinburgh in the epic Winters of 1978-79 and 1981-82, I witnessed many nights over deep snow at -15ºC (5F). 1/2

I’ve noticed that too with warmer days this month. 90m asl notably cooler than lower sites even on days when the wind isn’t that strong and sun insolation present. My site is more akin to Heathrow temps in Summer as it’s non-standard on the top of a fence.

It was an exceptionally warm night across the UK for late September, with some stations recording 22°C during the early hours. The temperature has been rising all through the night at Edinburgh, for example. Red box highlights just how much last night stands out from individual site records.

Serious rain event on the East Coast of Scotland happening right now. Edinburgh had thunder and lightning from 06:00 with rainfall rates up to 70mm/hr and 16mm has already fallen. Risk of flooding and difficult driving conditions.
Rain radar showing red colours denoting heavy rain and patches of very intense thunderstorm rainfall affecting Lothians and Fife. The large swathe of heavy rainfall is moving East however it is prolonged event bringing in excess of 25mm to many areas.

Met up with competitive sailors Ina yacht club in Edinburgh last evening. They haven’t had a good season in the Firth of Forth. Too much wind or not enough. Is the climate change? That was the question. Any takers?

The same system that brought rain to London today is bringing torrential rain to the Barcelona coastline from midnight. We've already had a government warning on our phones. Models predict up to 50mm rainfall, however totals in some places may exceed 100mm, with hail and damaging wind gusts.
Civil Protection Alert 'Torrential rain is forecast tomorrow until 5pm in Baix Llobregat, Baix Penedès, Garraf and Vallès Occidental. Avoid travel and stay away from rivers, streams and ravines. In an emergency call 112.

Minimum of 19.4ºC on the Hill, making it one of the warmest nights of the year. A squall line currently spanning from Exeter, Oxford, Cambridge and Norwich is moving East and will clear through London around 10:00. This will bring a fresher feel but with some more rain behind it for a while.
Rain radar of England and Wales showing a large swath of rainfall from South Wales to the Wash and ahead of it a thin line of more intense rainfall indicating a squall line. H/T netweather.tv

As a summer month August is further away from the Solstice than May, so it's understandable Summer sunshine figures get heavy lifting from June and/or July. Interesting data.

Temperature-wise, local to me, summer 2026 was further beyond 2025 & 2018 than they were beyond the likes of 2006 & 2022. Record high is increased by 0.85°C for min, 1.40°C for max. Compared to the famous summer of 1976, the mean daily max was 1.5°C higher, min 1.8°C higher.

CET for the year running at 2.63ºC above 1961-90 at the end of August. For the maximum annual mean CET by calendar date we are running 0.36ºC above any previous record in 2022.
A graph showing that the current maximum mean Central England Temperature (since end August 2025) is higher than anything we have seen before, at 11.66ºC. Apart from March to early July when 2007 was the record holder, since January, 2026 has held the top position in the CET record going back to 1772.

No discernible trend in back to school week improving weather wise in Ireland despite what Irish people say. Likely just a cultural thing of expectation (expectations being higher in summer/August vs early Sep with many going back to work/school).
