My least favorite trope of all is 8 episodes building to a big confrontation... confrontation is set up to come next at the end of episode 8... ...and then, an entire fucking hour about the villain's childhood for episode 9.

To be clear: done well -- as in WATCHMEN -- it can be great. I have enjoyed a lot of Lindeloff's work. But done poorly... it's 10 episodes of Surf Dracula every goddamn time.

I may be oversimplifying a cause and effect... but Damon Lindeloff is a very big fan of the comic book WATCHMEN, which elegantly weaves backstory into present narrative. He loves it so much he used the formula for LOST, and everyone on television fell in love with it. It has been a net negative.

Mine are the opposite: usually for books that are five years out of print, and always for IP work I've done and wouldn't make a cent if it sells more copies. My favorite was one on LinkedIn asking if I felt I was doing enough, personally, to promote a project I'd worked on. For Warner Brothers.

Exactly... I pointed that out elsewhere: you could swap the cover on the ebooks overnight. Easiest thing in the world. Not surprised they did it for DUNE.

Especially in the 21st century, where you could at least have swapped out the covers on the ebooks for something relating to the series. You could do that within 24 hours.

Like... no one is giving away Tolkein. No one is giving away George RR Martin. No one is giving away Jack Reacher books. The whole point is the shows SELL the books, not the other way around.

That's SUCH a great point about the cover. When Amazon chooses their new James Bond, you're going to see a new release of all the books with that dude on the cover. My copy of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep from the 80s has Harrison Ford on the cover. "When is a tie-in not a tie-in?"
