I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

I see what it's doing to my students, my kid & his friends to have lost hope for a livable future. The men who stole the future have kids & grandkids of their own but seem to feel nothing for them. How to fight people who despise humanity, INCLUDING THEIR OWN? Is this as new a problem as it seems?

I have some ideas about how to cut off the broligarchs' money supply (see Chapter 5 of "Offshore"), but that may not be enough. They're entrenched in all our institutions now--burrowed like giant malevolent ticks into our body politic, in our schools. Can they be removed without a bloodbath? idk

It's true that collective action by humanity *could* turn this around, maybe even non-violently: there are way more of us than there are of the nihilists. But how? Even if I could reach enough people to make a difference & they believed what I had to say, what should actually be done, step by step?

Lastly, if you want to know what an academic institution with no library or a library with no librarians is like, look no further than primary and secondary education. We have hollowed out school libraries and fired school librarians, and things aren't great down here.

Anyway, it's Banned Books Week, and one easy way to ban books is to have untrained staff running a library. If you are at one of these higher ed institutions swapping librarians for subject experts, take this week to voice your complaints. Everyone else, tell admin you support your librarians.

Sure, you can have academic libraries with subject experts, but if they can't find resources, evaluate them for relevance to the patron, or do the backend stuff like collection development, cataloguing and metadata, etc, then you don't have a librarian. Where do you learn that stuff? The MLIS.

The realization we had in the field years ago was that it was less important to have deep knowledge about one specific subject than it was to know how to organize, maintain, collect, conserve, and provide access to that subject material.

When I started in archives in 2009, to get the most opportunities it was recommended to have both an MLIS and a master's in history, to appeal to the old school archives folks near retirement who were historians and the new school folks who were librarians. Now most are just MLIS.

Look, I got a lot of issues with the MLIS, esp around gatekeeping the profession. But by arguing that you don't need trained librarians to do the work of a trained librarian is just an excuse to push us out. It's a devaluation of our skills and knowledge.

The measles numbers being reported are probably undercounts. They don't include people who have minor or subclinical symptoms. However, the danger to unvaccinated people is the same. If you aren't vaccinated, do so, otherwise you could endanger those who cannot be vaccinated.
