Kakao took Tapas and turned it into an app where indie creators were hidden away in the "Community" tab. Turns out that doesn't just stop them finding non-Kakao content, it also stops them seeing anything not curated by Kakao, including the personal opinions of creators.

The people who consume only localised Kakao premium comics on the app aren't necessarily going to stumble across creators talking about the shutdown and where they're moving, because those are uploaded by publishers, not creators.

If you've never read the comic, it's about dorky british magic knights fighting a tyrannical king. It's got a little sapphic romance and an explicitly autistic character who isn't treated like an annoying burden.

Yeah, when they ask for feedback, I'm definitely going to bring that up. It's like they've increased the volume and intensity through the day in line with the volume and numbers in the crowd. I don't get why the music needs to be audible so badly at a zine event.

So if you're moving from Tapas to a website, it's honestly not a bad option. It's definitely made things smoother for me. I'm mostly just copy-pasting my comments to the blog area and removing parts that reference Tapas and the like.

So my clever and gorgeous Mx got the WordPress and Toocheke theme set up, and it turns out you can import Tapas pages with that! All that's needed is to edit things like the theme and make sure creator comments are in the right box and add/tag chapters if you want them.

It's like they forgot that webcomics can do really well from loyal readers who aren't served by mainstream publishers, and you can do well by hosting them if you simply give skilled storytellers a place to do their thing and be found organically.

Ultimately, you'll be straining under the cost of maintaining so many series, most of which won't make money after their initial run ends, and you'll have destroyed your ability to get a breakout hit, because even great new user generated comics won't be able to build an audience.

It might make money in the short term, but to keep up that pace, you'll have to platform worse and worse series, and when you come back for the home grown stuff, desperate for content, the good ones have gone away wherever they can earn a living.

I tried to warn them repeatedly how it was all looking VERY Tokyopop-like. If localised content is doing well, it's not a good idea to then flood the market with every series you can localise, regardless of quality, at the expense of home grown stuff.

And the staff who interacted with the creators were largely very nice. I hate the thought of them losing their jobs while the higher up corporate people who ruined the app will probably not suffer anything like that for their utter incompetence and greed.

It was a great site for finding lovingly made queer webcomics/novels with a much less toxic vibe than Webtoon, and they went and turned it into just a place to funnel as much localised studio-made Kakao content to English speakers regardless of if it buried the works that built the platform.

These have higher image quality than the Tapas or Webtoon uploads, a few minor fixes and include things like creator notes and concept art, particularly in book 2. Plus the pages aren't spread out into a scroll format, so you're reading closer to how I drew the pages.

I'll probably go through the Tapas version to save some of the best and funniest comments before they're gone. I think that's really the part I'll miss most about Errant on Tapas; some of the readers were SO funny! And also astute at picking up details!

Yeah that's the problem... I can absolutely imagine Widdershins is still ticking along very nicely, but it's been there a really long time, and I'm not sure how well I can build something from scratch in an era where a lot of social media won't even open links in an external browser.
