The megalithic tomb known as 'The Calf House' in the Cavan Burren. The monument’s unusual name comes from the fact that it was modified and reused in the 19th century as an animal shelter. The Cavan Burren is a wonderful place for a walk to encounter millennia of Ireland's memories. #Ireland

Smile, it’s Friday! 😃 Meet ‘The Oldest Smile in the World’ a tiny face that’s been smiling for some 7,400 years! Carved from oak during the Mesolithic, this small human figure was found in 1966 in a layer of peat during dock construction at Willemstad in the Netherlands. #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a human figure roughly carved from dark brown oak wood during the Mesolithic period about 5,400-5,300 BC. It is 12.5 cm tall with a long body with two finger-shaped indents on the right hand side (left in my photo), suggesting it was made to be held in the hand. The stylized head has deeply carved eyes, nose, and open mouth. The triangular shape of the mouth makes it look as if the figure is smiling, leading to its description as ‘The oldest smile in the world’. It is displayed against a black display case background at Landesmuseum Halle in Germany where the figure is currently on loan for the ‘Shamaness’ exhibition. It is part of the permanent collections of Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden, Netherlands. It was found in a layer of peat in 1966 during the construction of a dock at Willemstad, North Brabant, Netherlands.

#RomanSiteSaturday The Roman Temple of Évora. The temple is believed to have been constructed around the 1st century CE, in honour of Augustus, who was venerated as a god during and after his rule.
The Roman Temple of Évora (Portuguese: Templo romano de Évora), also referred to as the Templo de Diana (albeit wrongly, after Diana, the ancient Roman goddess of the moon, the hunt, and chastity) is an ancient temple in the Portuguese city of Évora (civil parish of Sé e São Pedro). The temple is part of the historical centre of the city, which was included in the classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It represents one of the most significant landmarks relating to the Roman and Lusitanian civilizations of Évora and in Portuguese territory.

This is a weight that was used by a Viking trader, some time in the 9th or 10th century. This is one of a number of weights discovered in Dublin. They were used in balance scales to weigh silver in the time before standardised currency. See it on display in the National Museum of Ireland.
A small weight on display in the National Museum of Ireland. It consists of lead attached to a small animal head made of gilt bronze.

With pointed ears and flared nostrils, the head may depict a wolf or dog, and it has been likely recycled from a stolen piece of metalwork taken from a shrine from an Irish church.
