Gonna have to level with you, I'm not a real architect. I just showed up in this turtleneck and, well, everything spiralled from there.

I'm actually reading this book at the moment, and I'm genuinely terrified that I've somehow activated the Lathe of Heaven by doing so. Can anyone recommend any novels in which only good and positive things happen, please?

Really enjoying all the smooth-brained centrists discovering that, actually, they no longer like Tom Watson. How can he have strayed so from the light?

After the children in Gaza documentary and Bob Vylan I remember the head of Ofcom being all over the news. They had 10,000 complaints about Channel 4's ADHD disgrace and haven't said a word.

There is a fairly straightforward way for a person who has opinions about what political direction the GPEW should take to actually make those opinions worthwhile. This is not it.

When my daughter was about four, she had scarlet fever and lost a frankly terrifying amount of weight, and one of the Health Visitor's tips to help her gain the weight back was to add loads of butter to every thing she ate; pasta, mash, scrambled eggs etc. This was also the slogan that we used.

I don't want Marisa Tomei playing a disconcertingly sexy Mongoose! That would just upset me. But I like the Rhames and Chiklis idea, except they should also be twins and it's never explained how such a thing could be the case.

I once claimed that The Munsters TV show was called "The Ulsters" when they sold it to RTE, and dubbed with Larne accents, because Herman Munster is clearly Protestant. It don't think it worked, but I gave it a good go.

Literally caught cheating in the closest thing to a national religion we have in the UK, the football, and a bunch of total roasters to boot, but kicking them out would upset the Americans so we just don't even mention it.

To be honest, neither is convincing. So you're saying these two law-enforcement officers, who presumably work closely together, were shot in entirely unrelated incidents? UNLIKELY. Or maybe the deputy was shot by one of your policeman-shooting accomplices, which doesn't absolve you AT ALL.

I love this. "Yes, I've checked the rules again and you are not in fact allowed to ride a bicycle in the marathon. My bad."
She wrote an apology statement on Chinese social media platform RedNote, where she has 520,000 followers and regularly posts running videos.

“Riding a bicycle during the Berlin Marathon did indeed violate race rules,” the statement read, translated from Mandarin to English. “Even if I felt unwell on the course, it should never be a reason for me to break the rules.”

Kemi is probably too young to remember John Barnes receiving boos and monkey chants from England supporters in the Maracana stadium in 1984 when he scored England's "goal of the century," but she should be old enough to remember Jimmy Greaves questioning his patriotism in the Daily Mirror in 1992.

Actually, my son is called "Vernon Demerest O'Reilly," after his late uncle Vernon Demerest Maguire. This is very offensive to the Vernon Demerest community, and I've reported this post.
110
Dara O'Reilly @daraor.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is objectively unlikely!
Vernon Demerest is a pompous and self-confident senior pilot for Trans America Airlines and brother-in-law to Bakersfeld. He opposes him on a number of issues of policy. Despite his overbearing attitude, he is an expert pilot who helps to bring Flight Two home safely, although the actual flying is done by Captain Anson Harris, an equally expert pilot who is being given his final "check ride" by Demerest before being certified for international flight captaincy.

They did a new reprint in the 2010s, which had an introduction from Daniel Roche who played him in the TV series, and I think they did another reprint to commemorate the centenary of Just William in 2022. Maybe even a Folio Society edition, because I seem to remember an email about it.

A man stands at the ticket counter of a movie theater. An employee asks if he’d like to upgrade his ticket. “Would you like to upgrade to Cinema VIP? You can pause the film for bathroom breaks.” Our man is intrigued by the offer. Next slide. Inside the movie theater. The film has been paused and the movie screen lets the audience know: “PAUSED FOR VIP.” Our man stands at the center of the theater with his hands raised and a VIP badge attached to a lanyard around his neck. He’s part of the Cinema VIP program but at what cost? The other patrons have become increasingly upset with the pauses. A chorus of angry voices rain down on the VIP from around the theater. “Sit down, toilet boy,” one woman yells. She’s had enough of his potty breaks. “Oh COME on.” “Get this guy outta here.” “He ruined the trailers, too.” “Take his badge.” “3 times?!” “Put a diaper on.”

I'm a tiny bit sceptical, although keeping an open mind, about the suggestion that The Fairford Incident was a phony war "attack" by Iran proxies. But if it was, or even if we believe they it was, it's probably sub-optimal to let them know that it was a successful one. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

People say that making cuts is all about tough choices, but the time it took from the start of the media narrative that Burnham needed to signal his serious credentials by cutting it, to the announcement at conference, was only about 6 weeks. Doesn't seem that tough.

Given that it's always and only the same "tough choice," and they make it again and again and again, you'd think it would be less difficult for them by now.

Look, I'm not saying you CAN'T lobby The Pope, but you want to be I don't know King Philip II of Spain wanting your daughter's volatile and unproductive first marriage to be annulled or something. Not, you know, THIS bullshit.
According to a bombshell report in the NYT, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.

Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisors "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.

For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under non-disclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.
