Science-minded mom and grandma, with a couple of trans kids. Typos may be mine or autocorrect, you decide.

Seems to be. If you hear someone say anything at all about trans folks it is negative. Most of them are just silent. They are letting conservatives control the narrative and there is no evidence that it will help them in the long run. It may just be what the billionaires who fund both sides want.

Mine is a Dem who won his primary with 70+% of the vote. He doesn’t think he needs to listen to anyone except the Dem establishment who have decided that trans people aren’t worth fighting for. With his margins he totally could.

Trans reps who Mike Johnson made rules to bar them from bathroom in the capital. How many would it take to get their fellow representatives to not vote this way. My congressman voted for this and won’t discuss it with me.

Why are there laws about who can access medical care that is recommended by the AMA, the AAP, the APA and others? Legislators should stay in their lane and let the medical community come up with guidelines that make sense. Rather than pick a group without sufficient representation to pick on.

So every random person who doesn’t have to make these decisions gets a say? You see that as a reasonable approach? Because anyone who has concerns about the medical decisions of other families needs to mind their own business and realize they might know better. Passing legislation isn’t it.

Especially given that the provision being discussed banned puberty blockers as well which have zero impact on future fertility.

Sarah SK (she/her) @dappledlight.bsky.social · 6h
Other than puberty blockers, there is a risk of infertility. But not always. Why shouldn’t informed consent between providers, patients, and parents be the standard like it is for other medical interventions for minors? Why does anyone else get a say? That’s the real crux of the issue.

And if lack of treatment causes a child to commit suicide that is also a permanent decision. Acting like forgoing treatment is neutral is totally missing why the treatment is needed. People don’t transition just because.

When I try to talk about trans kids with my congressman he shifts the subject to talk about other things. So while he hasn’t come out against trans kids (except for voting for the bill that stripped trans care for children of service members) he doesn’t actually come out in favor.

I watched the series finale of Little House on the Prairie recently. I had forgotten that they blew up the town. Such an 80s ending.

The current trajectory is anything but progress. But go off. And it’s partly because of the shift of the Overton window over the past few decades. Which is why voting for dems no, especially ones espousing transphobic crap, is unlikely to be helpful at all. Even the “good” ones aren’t very helpful.

Bless your heart. I’m a grandmother who has watched the liberal/progressive party become indistinguishable from the Conservative Party of my youth. The lesser of the evils just keeps getting more evil.

Sarah SK (she/her) @dappledlight.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The idea that trans people in the US who are politically active don’t understand the ramifications is so patronizing. Personally the voting for the lesser of evils has not worked in my lifetime. Why would it work now?

Sarah SK (she/her) @dappledlight.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Absolutely. I suspect it is closer to 3-5%. But even 1% is a lot of people. In my graduating class in high school there were 418 students. 1% means at least 4. Back then none of them were out. Heck I only remember one out gay guy in my class. Times have changed for the better.

Seeing your rights wither on the vine in front of you is hard. Having people yell at you while that is happening is unconscionable. And to be clear, many of the rights for the trans community that are being rolled back are things they’ve been able to do for decades.

politicians and their consultants. When you see a minority group being attacked and you don’t understand why they don’t seem to care about others replaces that minority demographic with another and see how you feel.

Or will you fell abandoned by both the candidate and the rest of the party? Unless you can get the rest of the people in the party to stand up for you the candidates will feel like they are doing the right thing. So instead of yelling at trans folks and their allies for their dismay aim it at the

Would you feel okay putting your check mark next to that name? Would you just vote for them and wait for a better time to demand a change? Would you be understanding when people tell you that you need to vote for them anyway because it will affect other demographics is the other guy wins?

I’ve been thinking about the backlash trans folks are getting when they express their unwillingness to vote for candidates that are throwing them under the bus. Imagine if politicians who you otherwise agree with said that they wanted to roll back women’s rights. No more birth control or abortion.

Just read two books in a row with unreliable narrators. Not my favorite trope. And both books could have benefitted from either more editing or research. I’m hoping the one I just picked up is better.

Are you contacting these politicians and telling them to change course now and stop sacrificing your trans brothers and sisters? Because if only a small fraction of people are willing to do that it shows how othered trans folks are. You want them to help society you don’t consider them part of.
180
Sarah SK (she/her) @dappledlight.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
You are right. They are bystanders. They are targets. They shouldn’t just be sacrificed for others. They should be defended by taking these politicians to task and not letting THEM get away with these positions.

Sarah SK (she/her) @dappledlight.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
It’s unclear it is even political expediency. Who exactly are they trying to court? MAGA Republicans? Because it sure isn’t leftists.
010
Sarah SK (she/her) @dappledlight.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Why are you pressuring the trans folks and their allies rather than the politicians who are making these statements to recant their throwing of trans people under the bus.

Genetic testing will undoubtedly find people who don’t have the expected chromosomes due to a variety of reasons. There’s a reason biology teachers don’t have students test themselves.

Recently got a fibromyalgia diagnosis which required switching doctors. The one I’d had before I thought was great until it was clear there was something chronic going on. Then I would get shrugs. It was so frustrating.

Gender diverse children provide their adults with the opportunity and motivation to improve society in ways that are more positive for everyone. The need that children have for their parents’ love and support encourages adults to grow outside of their comfort zones and develop into better parents.

Speaking of Harriet she is the epitome of nasty capitalist. She doesn’t seem to have much in redeeming qualities except caring about her kids by spoiling them. But Nels is a nice person who seems on the up and up. There is little to explain the attraction there. Harriet must be wild in bed.

I was obsessed with the books and the show as a child. I wore my hair in two braids every day. And even had a bonnet and a prairie dress.

Little House takes place in Minnesota. Mostly a small town called Walnut Grove. The first two seasons were fairly slice of life on the frontier. Crops ruined by hail, blizzards, etc. Then it got to be more preachy with lessons.

The circus comes to town more than once too. I’m not an expert on late 19th century circuses but Walnut Grove doesn’t seem like it would be much of a draw.

The show is super fat phobic even when they are trying to show acceptance. It’s a regular punchline that Harriet is fat. Nellie is scolded about eating too much when she is pregnant. And Nels is super ashamed of his sister who is the fat lady in a circus that comes to town.

I’ve been watching the OG Little House on the Prairie on Roku. I have some thoughts. First the music is straight out of the 70s. The theme song would work for any number of 70s shows. I was not surprised to see that the composer also worked on Bonanza. He even won two Emmys for Little House.
