Honestly I feel like Chain of Memories could be greatly improved with a few small tweaks. Just give XP on kill normally and at a slight reduction, have enemies sometimes drop cards and Moogle Points (replaces chasing orbs), and increase boss XP a smidge.

A lot of genres in games are pretty stupid because they give people very limited expectations and an unwillingness to engage with anything beyond that scope. Like your “Character Action Game” must be DMC with a different coat of paint or else you will be drawn and quartered.

The whole “9 games that shaped you” thing is obviously just the games you grew up playing for the most part, which is why I’m so critical of modern AAA releases because those are the games kids are growing up with today.

It’s weird seeing what’s classified as a retro game evolve because like, PS2/GameCube/Xbox/Wii games don’t really look or play much differently than games today. Yeah fidelity is way higher now but that’s about it, hence the remakes.

One of my favorite little parts of the Resident Evil movie is how it addressed why all the games have you running around looking for keys all the time instead of your characters just shooting the locks. It eventually relenting and letting the guy just shoot open a lock was also cathartic.

I think what I find sinister about a lot of remakes anymore is they don’t even label themselves as “Remake” or other differentiate anymore. They just straight up cannibalize the original work. Hell, even a not remake game with God of War 2018 did the same thing, dropping the 4 from its title.
