Super excited to present this! We discussed this for the first time at Climate Week ~2 years ago, and it's amazing now that is seeing the light of day!!

Analyzing the impacts of stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) requires climate data at finer spatial resolution than global models provide. We’re releasing an open-source, downscaled SAI dataset to support SAI impacts research and to expose uncertainties associated with downscaling itself.

@zachweinersmith.bsky.social maybe has thought a bit about this?

Dan Visioni @danvisioni.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I picked Planck because this thought came to be as I was explaining Planck's curves to my Climate Dynamics class today, and I was recounting that Planck's law was heuristically derived to fit observations, and the mathematical artifice turned out to be in a sense "the truth". So it got me thinking.

If we trained an LLM on all scientific literature up to point t, with t the time of a massive scientific advancement in the physics of the 19th century, would the LLM eventually get to it?

Dan Visioni @danvisioni.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Note that this is not meant to discard human intuition nor to suggest that LLMs have consciousness: but I've always believed we give too much weight to a "genius" as having discovered something, while clearly the ground had been prepped for them by many others. Their skill was seeing the pattern.

I've often wondered if many big scientific breakthroughs in physics were not somewhat inevitable, in the sense that scientific understanding was mature enough that *eventually* they were going to be discovered by someone. Planck's law comes to mind. Maxwell's equations too. Hence the question:

show preliminary results based on CMIP6 models, with the hope to have enabled a better way to do CMIP6/CMIP7 comparisons. As always my big gratitude to all the GeoMIP community. Also glad the GMD editors thought our work was good enough to be a highlight paper, it was indeed kind of a big lift! 😊

If you think this research should not happen at all, that's your prerogative, even if I think you're wrong. Plenty of back and forth in other venues to litigate that! I remain convinced that we need a plan to do good (and transparent, open and unbiased) research, and this is an attempt to have one.

If you think SRM is mainly a governance problem, I couldn't agree more! I have engaged with ecologists, social scientists, security experts & more. We do believe that concrete, robust & trusted information is the best starting point for any governance discussion. But we don't mean to replace them.

If you think any of the activities are wrong/misestimated, great, let us know, and we'll document the changes like we've done for our other tools if we end up changing things (uncertainties.reflective.org & simulator.reflective.org). We'll try to keep this up to date with anybody's relevant research

Trying not to look at too many comments to preserve my sanity and my working day, but just to say: 1) yes, we published this. I'm very proud of the large amount of work many people put into it! 2) this is our v1. We engaged many external people, and will always be looking for meaningful feedback

Yeah when I was interviewing for faculty positions, back in 2022, someone asked me "well what if we actually solve climate change? won't your research be obsolete?" and my answer was "buddy, you'll find me in a bar getting drunk celebrating, and then I'll go work on exoplanets or something"

as for the RFPs we run, we have 0 control over what gets published with the data, and we explicitly ask the funded teams to make the research pipeline public (data, code, etc). Same thing is for all of the GeoMIP data I've helped host/share: never tried to control what people do with it...

This is a fair concern. As someone who works with Reflective, bc I believe in the need for more research (and I've always been explicit about it) one of the main reason to have an open, transparent roadmap is that it is much easier to see what would it take to get to that position (in the two Gates)

Dan Visioni @danvisioni.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I think we agree. Having a transparent scientific basis (which is not the same as having a plan/programme for deployment) is to me the best way to inform that security/defence foresighting framework. You can't govern nor prevent what you don't understand.

Dan Visioni @danvisioni.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
And we also have already partnered up with many groups focused on security, conflict and climate to understand how those other questions can be addressed. With our simulator, and security experts, we have participated in war-games, including at the Montreal Climate and Security Summit and NYCW.

Dan Visioni @danvisioni.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Hi Andy, I think this is fair. For this version of the Roadmap, we focused solely on scientific questions. Doesn't mean that governance/political questions are not important, just that we think those other questions are best served by having a robust scientific understanding first.

There are still big unknowns about solar geoengineering: Reflective has just released a road map of the studies & experiments needed to reduce that uncertainty — and make an "informed decision" about its use:

This road map could help us decide whether to deploy solar geoengineering
A new report from the nonprofit Reflective lays out the experiments needed to better understand our ability to dim the sun.

But at the time of crossing a threshold into overshoot, you don’t yet know 1) if you can scale CDR, 2) how much, so how high is your peak 3) how fast, so how long is your peak and decline and 4) exactly how dangerous staying for X time above Y temperature would be. Then your SRM problem becomes

Since that doesn’t reduce cumulative carbon, even if you do those but overshoot, you’re left at whatever GWL even at net-zero emissions. Then your decision around long term commitment over net-negative emissions (assuming you can do them) is “is adapting at whatever GWL easier than coming back down”

What I’d answer here is that the 3 things are different from a temporal perspective, and so it’s not a matter of picking one. Rather, based on their temporality, one can better identify the risk trade-offs. Deep methane cuts could be done quickly, they’re great, but “only” reduce the rate of warming

There is no escaping fascism by running away from it in 2026. Post Trump 2 there was a lot of scolding “just move back to EU”. Aside from the practical impossibilities -people move based on lots of reasons- that same black wave is threatening EU, too. AfD winning doesn’t make me giddy, just sad.

The real threat to academic freedom isn’t a Belgian university enforcing its own rules against an avowed white supremacist, but from predators purging their victims from the academy all together. Weird that this doesn’t inspire 600+ signatories in an open letter; I wonder what principle is at work.
