Italy’s always a bit late on the best global trends, so no wonder we still have old-school climate deniers. This guy was offered an entire page on a newspaper arguing there are no statistically significant changes in summertime temperatures in Italy. His own plot says there’s a 0.5C/decade trend.
Italian newspaper denying climate change. Title says “It’s an average June. If you don’t believe me check for yourself meteorological data”

Looks like folks think it's ok to lie in an op-ed on @theguardian.com because cumulatively the authors have "100 years of climate science experience". I think science should not be misinterpreted to make a political point (even 1 I agree with), and what you see in the screenshot is totally false.

Since I get these kind of messages at least once a month, I think it bears repeating publicly what I wrote already elsewhere: I do not, out of principle, use my time (even 10’) to consult/help/brainstorm/chat with companies that want to make money out of climate intervention or weather modification.

The first line makes a generic statement about the fact that scenarios are used to provide plausible descriptions wrt to a range of variables. Later on, when describing the RCPs, van Vuuren says the following, stressing internal consistency, the meaning of “representative” and more.

Judge for yourself: we can just wave this away because his brain is cooked, but we can also ask if there’s reasons why people overall misunderstand the process (is it official from a committee or is it bottom-up?) and why there has been so much focus on “rejecting” RCP8.5.

iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... Keeping with the theme of the week that seems to be arguing over GWP20 and GWP100, what better week to have our paper out where we say they're both kinda meh and we propose a new one? 😆 @hausfath.bsky.social

Last week we hosted the 16th Annual Workshop of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) at the The University of Tokyo. A great success and, as always, a pleasure and honor to represent this community, and to see over 100 participants from all over the world (every continent!)

Today I spent some time just sitting in the Damon Room at the Mesa Labs, staring at the wall of honors, where so many of NCAR accomplishments are memorialized. So much expertise, so much brilliance, so much willingness to serve. Coming here is always the best way of finding reasons to keep fighting.

Wonderful spending seven full days at one of the places I hold most dear in my heart, #NCAR, for three different workshops (two CESM winter meetings, one I help manage as co-chair of the Whole Atmosphere Working Group, and a mid-project meeting with the Planetary Sunshade Foundation)…

Main finding is that, overall, these feedback balance out and result in changes that are independent of injection rates: if you aim to cool more, you don't end up with worse or better health outcomes (but regionally this varies). Air quality is complicated and not always fully represented in ESMs...

We looked at various drivers, including cooling-driven surface O3 changes, drivers of changes in particulate matter, and internal variability, combined with up to date exposure–response functions to understand the ultimate impacts.

Our review is now live! We have provided a large, comprehensive take of not just what we know, but also what we still need to know, and how, about how marine ecosystems could be affected by marine CDR and by Sunlight Reflection Methods (SRM). agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

2025 was a weird year with its ups and downs, and its big fights and tears and lots of what I think is valuable work, and I said yes to many things I shouldn’t have, but I guess above all it was when I ended up on stage with NDT and on his podcast and we partook of his alcohol stash after.

Just published to wrap up the year: “Response of Tipping Elements to Different Strategies of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection” We analyzed the response of various climate metrics relevant to a set of climate tipping element under SSP2-4.5 and under a set of SAI scenarios modeled using CESM2.
Fig 2 from the linked paper, showing how different SAI strategies would affect different climate tipping elements.

When I say you’re completely making this up to have a fictional argument with me about something I didn’t say, I mean it. I have a deep respect for you and your work and I’ve always tried to engage politely with you. If you’re not interested in doing the same and want a boogie-man, F off however.

Thanks Ben, was a pleasure! FWIW, today's my last class in my Climate Dynamics course (because I'm leaving for the IPCC LAM meeting Saturday) and it's also the only one where we discuss SRM and its potential problems, so this is my last slide for the day...

I just finished this fantastic trilogy of 80s feminist sci-fi (I’d never heard about before going to my local bookstore!) that explores a future world where the 19th amendment has been repelled [then many wacky things happen in pure 80s sci-fi style]. A good reminder of how flimsy progress is..

I’m sure is just a coincidence, but the Syracuse Orchestra today is playing Beethoven’s Seventh, which premiered at a concert celebrating Napoleon’s defeat. He dedicated the Third to Napoleon as a champion of liberty, but ripped the dedication from the manuscript when he declared himself Emperor.
Note from the program: True, the Seventh appears to be a work of absolute music, without a program. It doesn't have an explanatory subtitle (as the Third does); it doesn't serve to describe external scenes (as the Sixth, the Pastorale, does); nor does it set a verbal text (as the Ninth was later to do). Nonetheless, since that historically charged premiere, it has had a political edge, sharing the anti-authoritarian spirit of such works as the prison-rescue opera Fidelio (the final version of which was premiered just a few months later). That aura of social commitment has remained for over two centuries. The popular second movement (encored at the premiere) was transformed by activist folksinger Pete Seeger into a song whose opening words (grammar sacrificed in favor of rhythm) are "We'll work together, though we work different"; Daniel Barenboim chose the Seventh to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I just finished reading “The Terraformers” by @annaleen.bsky.social and it made me so happy I need to share it here. It is rare to find such forward-looking, powerful sci-fi that manages to be hopeful about humanity while not shying away from its problems.

Out as preprint, we have some very interesting results looking at the radiative forcing impacts of the 2022 Hunga eruption. Based on the outcomes of the related OMIP, with many models from all over the world participating in this effort, we find a robust cooling signal from the Hunga volcanic plume.

Been thinking a bit about this long exchange I read here yesterday about AC being a luxury or not. I think this is the largest obstacle to framing degrowth around “sufficiency” for me: you’ll always find someone that finds your necessity as a luxury. What if they’re in charge of what you can have?

Ryan O’Loughlin and I have a new preprint where we ask: When are small-scale field experiments in solar geoengineering worth pursuing? philsci-archive.pitt.edu/25840/ We contrast concepts of “luxury” and “moonshot” research as a starting point to discuss criteria that could guide the community…
Title and abstract of the preprint mentioned at the link.

This started from an observation: if SRM is “cheap and easy”, and including it in an Integrated Assessment Model makes it always happen… why isn’t the world doing SRM? We explain this by discussing different phases in which risks perception play different roles in shaping how SRM is conceived.

Dan Visioni @danvisioni.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
Can we make testable hypothesis about how the perception itself of SRM -from publics, countries, decision makers- would affect different futures? And if yes, how do we go about building 1? What can outlining & modeling assumptions about how risks of climate change and of SRM tell us about our world?

@hollyjeanbuck.bsky.social called this one first (and was attacked for it) www.compactmag.com/article/the-.... What is the point of lying so stupidly about things as different as fluoride, EM radiation, vaccines and geoengineering (even if the latter currently doesn't exist)? I have some ideas.

As you can see, you have it reversed. Now, I don’t think that crazy wackos being against something is necessarily a good reason why one should be pro something, nevertheless, these are the facts.
