I don't disagree at all - my daughter reported one of those kids for making death threats. I'm just mentioning it as a way that a certain type of kids' interests make them outsiders, as opposed to when I was in high school.

I'm in a pretty libby area of CA, for sure, but at my kids' school, the right-winger gun-loving kind of kids get a ton of side-eye. Nobody much actively harasses them, but they're kind of kept on a short leash and really scrutinized as if they're school-shooters-in-waiting.

In the end, I suppose it's a very difficult position to be in to write a likable protagonist who is also committing a metaphorical school shooting, outright murdering innocent kids who did her no harm. I would have preferred she either have agency in the mass murder part, or make it more accidental.

That bit was really excellent and saves it. My main issue was the *spoiler* AP girl taking control and arguably removing Carrie's agency in the high school. I didn't necessarily mind the X-men thing happening basically only in the last ep, but it wasn't necessary or adding anything thematically.

Someone in junior high told me I walked weird, and showed me exactly why, actually in a very kind way, not bullying. I also had a penchant for Hawaiian shirts and neon shoelaces (tbf, it was the 80s), and noticed that wasn't the norm. Was a pretty closeted weirdo most of my life. Don't care, now.

New work to share! Pangenome studies treat gene presence/absence independently, but genes work together in pathways. By focusing on the covariance of gene loss, we show the Arabidopsis dispensable genome has modular co-evolutionary structure reflecting the biological organization of the plant 1/

Gene functional-state covariance reveals modular structure in the Arabidopsis thaliana dispensable genome
Classical multilocus theory predicts that selection acting on combinations of loci can maintain non-random associations among allelic states, causing selection to act on multilocus genotypes rather than individual alleles. Across eukaryotic species, pangenome studies have documented thousands of genes that vary in functional status between individuals, yet this variation is analyzed as if each gene evolves independently. Here we test for non-random association within the dispensable pangenome across 1,012 natural genotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana to better understand the structure and evolution of eukaryotic pangenomes. Genome-wide pairwise association testing of loss-of-function alleles across genotypes identified 150,033 significantly covarying gene pairs among 5,679 unique genes after controlling for kinship and population structure. Most associations were between genes on different chromosomes, and covarying gene pairs showed greater co-expression and functional similarity than expected by chance. Network analysis revealed a non-random higher-order architecture comprising stable functional communities with distinct biological functions and structured connectivity among communities. The enriched functions and connectivity of communities revealed a tight coupling of modules involving plant immunity, environmental response, and specialized metabolism, highlighting how these systems integrate and evolve in response to dynamic ecological pressures. Taken together, these results show that the dispensable genome has a complex higher-order structure driven by functionally interacting genes, and that variation in gene content provides a population-scale resource for investigating the organization and evolution of biological systems. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. I loved it right up until the last episode. Like, LOVED it, and thought people were being crazy. But, oof. Bad choices. And not in a "oh, my precious Stephen King book" way. Some extremely bad writing choices were made.

Providing an example of what I'm talking about doesn't prove me wrong. They are sophisticated enough in their language generation as to be able to generate writing in a way that is difficult for humans to discern as mimicry.

I don't think it is clear. Mimicking something is not doing it. LLMs can create images that look like paintings, but they aren't painting. They aren't even painting with digital tools. They're generating painting-like images. There is a difference, even if we can't easily observe the difference.

Hard agree with this. Pretty much everything that happened in that last season and finale is already foreshadowed in the books that are out. I do think GRRM would/will handle the details somewhat more intelligently, but the major events are almost definitely what he was going to do.

There are more than 9,000 species of springtails, most 1-3 mm in length, feeding on decaying plant & fungus on wet forest floors. A galaxy of weird little guys beneath our feet. Full video is here:

Nature photographer 'pendra100legs' does these amazing macro shots of tiny bugs. This one is delightful (I'll link below to the full thing). It's a globular springtail in genus Sminthurides. These insect-relatives can launch themselves 60 times their height in 1.6 MILLISECONDS. *Voomp*. Gone.

I dunno. I don't see Superman as authoritarian. He's been pure chaotic good, from the start. A JLA makes it all a little fuzzy, granted, but they aren't doing that (yet). Gunn made it the "Justice Gang."

I get it. I've read a lot of GL too, and this isn't quite the story I'd put to film with these characters this way. But, I trust this creative team is going somewhere, and I think it's saying things, even if it's a little heavy-handed or lacking subtext. We'll see.

This! Making the most powerful beings in the universe - who control the space cops - consistently incompetent assholes is a choice, made purposely by generations of Green Lantern writers who were and are trying to say something about power structures in our world.

The market for data centers is going to crater any minute now. If it's not operating now, it will never be. Local AI (ie stuff running on your laptop) is getting very good and the big AI companies are going to crash. Hard. Always were likely to, but now definitely will.

If you want a real answer about strategy about how to do scicom, it's STILL probably: Keep doing it, especially when others aren't, ie be consistent, and also be charming and funny and approachable to the general public. (Not that any of that is particularly easy.)

I truly don’t know how we undo the damage the Right has done not just to science institutions but to simply the desire to educate and be educated in this country. Many of our systems of scientific outreach are irreversibly dead and there was little pushback from the public.

I think it's cyclical, honestly. Right now, there's hope, but not a whole lot of long-term thinking going on anywhere. I've found it really hard to keep my own stuff going at all and basically let it all sit until all ... this ... rides itself out. Things WILL get better. Or it won't matter anyway.

When i was in my twenties a friend told me to pick the one with the biggest dimple on the bottom of the bottle, because better quality bottle means better wine. I doubt it, but it's served as well as any other mechanism of choosing.

Also, FWIW, there's kind of a running bit through the show of torture not working. The goons don't know the info, or have bad info, or they die before they can answer when they could have got them medical help. Again, not a defense.

I totally get it. In this case, it's fiction, and everyone tortured is a hired flunky for the big bad evil guy of the season. That is not at all a defense of it. Just answering your question. It's what the show is. And it's totally ok to not be ok with it.

Torture, per se, is not a common occurrence, but wanton violence and murder of "bad guys" is most definitely a part of that show. War crimes are committed by Reacher on a regular pace.

To be more clear, here are the things AI transcription still routinely borks when encountering: * Background noise * Multiple speakers talking at the same time * Accents * Accurately identifying a speaker * Technical terms * Place names All of these come up all the time in court, I would imagine

If it's zoom and the room is time-scheduled, it won't let you in more than ten minutes ahead, so that's probably your answer. If it's MSTeams, I would get there as early as humanly possible because that shit always has serious problems on my Mac. Like 30 minutes would not be weird.
