WRONG DEARH SPIRAL - this is literally an argument to merge three universities entirely on the basis of opaque, commercial and flawed university ranking systems. The higher education system is screwed people!

TROPE the "allowing people to deposit AAMs into IRs will be the end of publishing" furphy is raising its ugly head again. My semi-regular reminder that there has never been ANY EVIDENCE to back this claim. Here's something I prepared earlier(2015) unlockingresearch-blog.lib.cam.ac.uk/2015/10/16/h...

ARTICLE www.nature.com/articles/d41... reminding me of the robust discussion about 10 years ago around whether putting limits around where work could be published was an academic freedom matter. It is not. Academic freedom is much deeper and allows for free thought & questioning without persecution

GREAT! I remember discussions about the need for something like this in Australia in 2009, so it is fantastic that this has come to reality.

I just updated the page on the end of #OATP w some data on its work. cyber.harvard.edu/hoap/The_End... * Over its 17+ years, we had 121 active taggers. * We tagged 111,411 items, or 17.4 per day. * 93,909 were new at the time of tagging. 17,232 were older items tagged retroactively. #OpenAccess

Love it. One of my beloved memories of Cambridge were the cars that had got stuck on one of the busways. Was that deliberate? An attempt to avoid traffic? Or was the driver actually really stupid? Will we ever know?

I like to think that initiatives like the @openbookcollective.bsky.social are a really key part of the process of moving from this capitalist model of academia towards something that is more diverse, democratic, participatory, community-led, more about knowledge as a public good for all. #OAT26

FREE RIDE: Part of the argument I made at a session at Curtin Uni in Perth on 26 Aug called "Where are we at with Open Science" was that in Australia we are a high user of open infrastructure and we generally do not support this vital infrastructure. doi.org/10.26187/dea...

CLARIFICATION- the research article itself is not saying diamond to paid gold was inevitable, some commentary *about* the research findings is.

Agree with you both. I was cross about some commentary on the article from a commercial publisher sympathiser.

Danny Kingsley @dannykay68.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
PERSPECTIVE: despite some crowing that this was 'inevitable' etc, the article covers the period 2009-2026. In 2021 the estimated number of Diamond OA was 29,000 journals. Over the 15 year period covered, 440 journals have flipped. As a proportion of the 2021 number, that's 1.5%. Hardly an exodus.

'REASONABLE REQUEST' - In case we needed any further evidence that we should be explicit about data sharing ... www.openscience.nl/en/cases/whe...
Who is responsible?
Authors write the statement, but journals set the rules and decide if those rules mean something. When a journal requires a link to a specific, named repository, authors deposit the data there. When a journal accepts any statement at all, authors will write any statement at all.

A few changes would close much of this gap, and none of them are particularly radical. In short:

Require a repository link as part of the DAS, not just a written statement.
Align with existing data citation standards, such as those set out by CESSDA.
Check that the link actually works before the article is published.
Put a process in place for readers who later discover that promised data isn't accessible.
Funders should verify data sharing at the point researchers report back, rather than relying on journal policy alone.

TROPE - this week's Journalology re green OA: "If this happened at scale, libraries may end up cancelling institutional subscriptions making the journal financially unsustainable." Really? Where's the proof? That's right, THERE ISN'T ANY. See 2015 unlockingresearch-blog.lib.cam.ac.uk/2015/10/16/h...

So (if I understand this correctly), the way AI (companies) will "solve" all the major problems in maths, biology, and medicine in the next 5 years will be by stealing and building on the ideas of researchers naive enough to think their chats with AI companies would be private.

And it should change the way we think about papers. The notion most humans read most of them from first word to last is obviously delusional, but agents can. So what does this mean for how we present content, narratives, data, and context for human vs machine readers?

Agreed similarly assessments of money ‘saved’ by agreements when many of the papers would never have been made OA had there been a direct cost.

Danny Kingsley @dannykay68.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
But many APCs are being paid outside of these agreements at Faculty level. Don’t know about other countries but in Oz we don’t have anything like full coverage of agreements.
