Wow. I'm just now seeing this 2008 quote from Timothy Zahn, re: authors unnecessarily killing characters to create false tension.

"I often hear the argument that having major characters die is more realistic than having them always come through unscathed. Of course it is. But I personally don't want my fiction to necessarily be "realistic." I want my fiction to be entertaining. For me, that means watching engaging characters I care about get into and out of dangerous predicaments, working and thinking together in order to defeat the bad guys. While some authors (and readers) like the tension of wondering who will live and who will die, I prefer the tension of seeing how the heroes are going to think or work their ways out of each difficult or impossible situation they find themselves in. If I want realism and the deaths of people I care about, I can turn on the news."

Sometimes I think I might not be half bad at this...

Leaving the fire, she walked towards a nearby tree and sat. Leaning back against the trunk, her right hand reached instinctively for the woven leather bracelet on her left wrist. Her fingertips lightly tracing the individual strips of leather. It had been a gift from Naira, only a fortnight before she had betrayed and murdered Kenzi’s mother.
Why had she kept it? Was it like the Imperial Wolf tattooed across her right shoulder and the red and black half-plate she wore? Just a reminder of what she’d lost. Or was it a warning about what happens when you let someone get too close? A tangible reminder that Naira’s blade had pierced her heart the moment it had pierced her mother’s? Maybe it didn’t matter. As a rule, Kenzi didn’t dwell on the past. Life was a river that carried you forward. Every moment, whether good or bad, simply led to the next moment.
