To be clear, this is not my preferred solution. But for another 28 months or so the executive branch of the US government is controlled by corrupt people hostile to evidenced-based policy making. This could be a five line bill congress passes over a presidential veto.

If OpenAI could be sued for 10 billion dollars and Sam Altman could go to jail if their model goes rouge and hurts someone, they'd probably get serious about safety.

"make AI companies financially/criminally liable for what their models do" seems like an underrated way to get them to take safety seriously that doesn't require much regulatory oversight from a shrunken and corrupt US government.

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

From their perspective, under Trump, they've never experienced an unambiguous electoral loss. If Democrats actually take both houses of congress in November and do well downballot, the calculus might shift. But "win the senate" is basically a precondition for separating Republicans from Trump.

Danny Blinderman @dannyblinderman.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
What Republicans remember about 2018 are their senate gains, in 2020 that it was much closer than expected and they gained seats in the house, 2022 that they won the house, and 2024 that Trump won the popular vote and won the election.

Danny Blinderman @dannyblinderman.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
On the one hand its very odd the Republican Party remains so devoted to Trump given his very low approval rating and the dire midterm polling, on the other hand it makes more sense when you remember Republicans don't believe Trump has ever actually caused them to have a bad election.

As a matter of politics and to a much lesser extent policy I've been sympathetic to Mamadani's choice to allow continuity in how the NYPD operates since he won. But with street safety, deference to the police is beginning to seriously interfere with his other, core goals. A serious choice looms.

I'm convinced that this is just a big a reason for the tariffs as any (misplaced) economic claims: Tariffs give Trump discretionary power, and he likes being the sort of guy who can use govt power on a whim to impress people (in this case), or in return for other favors.

One thing that really worries me about the future is that the US national debt might actually become a real problem, and while Trump is blowing a hole in the budget a lot of Dems are telling us they can build a Nordic welfare state while cutting all our taxes.

Danny Blinderman @dannyblinderman.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Things will likely get a little better if Dems win congress, but you'd still need to get rid of the filibuster to pass a new regulatory framework. All the banal stuff that prevents congress from being effective still applies to AI, no matter how extreme the putative risks are.

Danny Blinderman @dannyblinderman.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
As the news from AI development gets scarier what is congress doing? Well the House is basically on recess because the speaker can't win a rule vote consistently. The senate gets back in a week, when it will likely resume its main function of rubber stamping Trump nominees for district court judges.

Telling the unvarnished truth about potential voters is not the highest calling of politicians. AOC is pandering to these voters because she wants their votes. That involves a certain amount of...flattery.

There's a species of elite pundit who is extremely concerned about AI (likely because they have friends high up in tech who give them what they think is the inside scoop) who are replicating epistemic practices they criticized when (allegedly) employed by the climate movement.

Underrated feature of our current moment is W. Bush said America's motives in Iraq were altruistic--spreading Democracy etc. The left said no they are doing extractive imperialism, and that's bad. The Right said, no they were doing altruism but they should have been doing imperialism, which is good.
