Retired principal engineer. Who is quite willing to bore you with how communication systems work. And old computer history, at least the parts I was involved in. Here to read what some of my favorite authors write.

Not complaining about the treaty banning old Freon variants. We do need ozone. One of the most successful climate repairs in history. No one talks about the ozone hole any more. Because it was fixed.

I had a Ford Explorer for those 22 years. What finally resulted in a new car was the AC. Freon leak. And it used the old Freon that is banned (ozone layer treaty). So to fix the AC required new compressor, new hoses, new connections. Possibly new condenser. Many thousands to upgrade.

There are always typos. Some mine. Some autocorrect that I don’t notice. A 5 minute edit window on posts would be nice.

My current 13 year old car has Bluetooth for both calls and for stereo which is nice. The Intel parking lot was weird. A lot of engineers bought new flashy cars every few years. And a lot of engineers drove the same old car for decades. Like I did. I almost always buy new. And run it forever.

I lived in the same apartment for 25 years. Multiple owners and management companies. Then I finally bought a house. The smarts are in the house. My previous car had a cassette player. On long trips I had a portable CD player and a cassette adapter. I drove it for a little over 22 years.

Fun is what you make it. I’m a retired engineer. Fun was hard problems that took lots of thought to solve. And coworkers that thought the same way. And that is agony to people who don’t think that way. Find what work you enjoy. Do it as much as you can. Avoid the rest.

My smart light switches all run locally. I need to push a button to get what I want. For example, I have a movie button that dims the lights in the TV room and a couple of other rooms visible from my seating position. Smart programming by me, no AI.

I don’t use any of the voice assistants with one exception. I use Siri to play selected music from my iPhone when in my car. That way I don’t have to look at the phone while driving.

My lawn sprinkle controller pulls weather data and adjusts watering times based on temperature, humidity, and recent and forecast rain. Data comes from the internet but the calculations are done locally.

That is a good approach. I have dumb dishwasher, clothes washer, and dryer. A fridge with no smarts. A dumb oven other than a timer. My thermostat has a little smarts to know what room(s) I’m in and adjust temperature correctly for those rooms. (Older Ecobee)

Don’t expect work to be 100% fun. But don’t allow it to become 0% fun.

This applies to every job. I spent 19 years at Intel doing engineering. Most of those years were long hours and lots of travel. A few of those hard years were great fun because of the technology and the coworkers. Most of the remaining years were not fun. I should have left much earlier.

I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al

Smart homes are nice in some ways. But they are a minefield of security issues due to some vendors actions. LG, Apple’s partner, is a worrisome company. Their TVs send a lot of info back to LG. They identify the content playing and report that home.

Some of the existing electronic locks are scary. Some IoT brands are very scary. Mostly the ones that send data back to China about everything. This is in addition to any data they share with the company that made it.

This doesn’t mean Apple controls the house. Or whoever you buy things from controls the house. The goal of Matter is to allow multiple brands to work together. With local control of the IoT features. And optional cloud/remote control if desired.

Dan Moore @danm628.bsky.social · 15h
I believe Apple is using Matter (home IoT standard). That uses a hub in the house to control things over the home network(s). Optionally this allows control remotely. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter_...

There are a lot of electronic locks. Many from companies I trust far less than Apple. In part because most of them are terrible locks. Most home locks are terrible and are very easy to open. All of them do have a manual mode (a key) for when batteries are dead. www.youtube.com/channel/UCm9...

Rod Serling was a king. WWII paratrooper in “The Death Squad,” TV pioneer, LOUD critic of McCarthyism who knew his status as a war hero put him in a privileged position to call shit out. Wrote critiques of racism into his scripts, created The Twilight Zone to escape the censorship that brought on.

Personally I prefer Web 1.0 websites for important sites. Little or no scripting. More secure. Potentially easier for those who are vision impaired to navigate. Stable, consistent interface design was once considered important. Now the focus is on looking cool.
