beef is negative food. you turn 1000 calories of feed into 100 calories of beef and a whole lot of methane and cow shit. ai does produce more food than the beef industry (zero)

I'll have to compare it with my old grinder (a Knock Feld 2 I got in...2018 I think?) to make sure I didn't just get really lucky with some extraordinary beans (Equator Mount Kirinyaga Kenya washed light roast). Huge reduction in fines at the very least.

I got a 1ZPresso ZP6 coffee grinder and brewed my first cup with it today. I've been making pour-over coffee for 10+ years and was always a *little* skeptical that the grinder matters *that* much. The first cup I put through it—a light roast Kenya—was one of the best I've ever brewed.

China Miéville wrote an introduction to Thomas More's Utopia and argued that Utopias say more about the people imagining them than about the imagined future itself. What does it say about us that we seem so distinctly incapable of utopian imagination to begin with?
000
Daniel Liden @danliden.com · 03/08/2026
Those futures seem impossible if we only see our immediate historical and political context. If nothing in our current system changes except for AI getting more capable, then sure, I see catastrophe. But we can imagine something better! And having imagined it, maybe we can start to move toward it.

I want political candidates, in debates, to have to answer this question: "What might the country look like in 50 years if you and your political progeny are in power during that time?" I want people to imagine what AI might do for the world if it were deployed for the betterment of society.
100
Daniel Liden @danliden.com · 03/08/2026
We—especially the left—lack much capacity for utopian imagination. Not "here's the list of bullet points we're aiming to achieve." But the ability to imagine a plurality of complicated futures where technology ends up being a net good. That outcome seems impossible without healthy imagination.

I find that even very skeptical friends respond reasonably well to my first-person narrative experiences where AI solved a real problem that would otherwise have been impossible for me. Especially if I note my own discomfort or uncertainties. Trying to tell them they're wrong...doesn't work.

I thoroughly enjoyed this review. Both as a piece of writing in and of itself and because it articulated a lot of the things I found frustrating about the film.

Daniel Liden @danliden.com · 26/07/2026
China Miéville wrote an introduction to Thomas More's Utopia (which, to your point, featured slavery...) where he argued utopian writing always says more about the writer's politics and historical/social setting in the present than it did about the imagined future. I liked that perspective.

I also read and enjoyed A Sand County Almanac. Beautiful contemplative book and one of the many things that has triggered the "why do I live in a city" thought over the past years. Mine is probably Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany.

It has been a lot of fun working with Omnigent in the weeks since its release. Policies were the component I had the least reason to use in my daily coding use, but I still wanted to understand them. I tested & wrote up a few different ways to use policies here: www.danliden.com/posts/202607...

(No data consulted in forming this opinion, to be clear. It's possible the daily commuter biker benefits from the options afforded by traditional bike lanes but the ever-more-common biker looking at their phone wearing over-ear headphones is safer in protected lanes. *shakes fist at cloud*)

blockclubchicago.org/2026/06/23/c... 1. Seems like a silly argument against bike lanes in the first place 2. As a biker, I oppose protected bike lanes. Conventional bike lanes make bikers more visible and give space to bike around obstacles. More ways to respond to situations = safer!

Every so often I rediscover the immense usefulness of registering window configurations in #emacs . <C-x r w> to register the configuration, navigate away, return with <C-x r j>. Much easier than trying to reconstruct a complicated window arrangement after e.g. deleting windows.
