Who pays for AI's productivity dividend? I asked what the response to OpenAI's intrusion into Medicare's statistics portal had cost. Nobody could tell me. My piece on the hack, and the work AI leaves for everyone else: www.techpolicy.press/when-ai-agen...

When AI Agents Break In, Governments Shouldn't Be Stuck With the Cleanup
OpenAI tasked its agent with answering a question about public spending. It has left us with a much bigger question about public power, writes Daniel Stone.

How Californians Feel About AI - Findings From the 2026 AI Compass - TechEquity Collaborative
Over a thousand Californians want stronger AI laws—but are legislators willing to act?

Californians want safeguards, but confidence in government’s ability to control AI remains low. Net trust is −19 points for California’s government and −34 for Washington. The demand for action comes with a challenge: earning the public’s trust by delivering.

That human-final-call requirement wins support from 73% of Californians excited about AI and 79% of those concerned about it. People with very different feelings about AI agree on this practical protection.

75% want a human to make the final decision when a worker is disciplined or fired, rather than an AI system acting alone. Just 8% oppose. Worker consultation and disclosure of AI-driven job cuts also win strong support.

Half of Californians feel they can choose whether and how AI is part of their lives. Yet 47% expect people like them to be left behind. Only 32% expect AI to make life better for people like them.

For many Californians, these concerns come from experience. 43% say they’ve been stuck dealing with AI when they needed a person. 28% say AI-generated information has misled them.

People with higher AI literacy are less concerned about it. But even in the highest-literacy group, 66% choose strong laws over trusting companies to act freely. Understanding AI and wanting safeguards go together.

Daniel Stone @danielstone.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
61% of Californians say AI is built mainly by people who don’t share their priorities. Just 11% disagree. That’s a substantial gap between the people building AI and the public whose lives it will shape.

The gender gap in views of AI narrowed this year. The movement came from men: 52% now feel concerned about AI’s future, up from 44%. Women’s views barely changed.

AI use rose over the past year, and more Californians trust it to make important decisions. Yet overall views of AI grew less positive. Growing adoption hasn’t brought growing enthusiasm.

More Californians are using AI. Fewer feel positive about it. Our new California AI Compass, in partnership with @techequity.bsky.social, explores that gap: who AI is being built for, how it affects people’s lives, and what they want lawmakers to do. diffusion.au/2026-califor... Some findings 🧵

What a year of AI bought in California
More Californians use AI than ever. Approval fell anyway, and 70% still want strong AI laws.

At Bay Area parties, everyone's talking about 'agents'—but no one can say exactly what they are. I think that’s a signal to be cautious — if folk are frothing for an outcome they can’t even define; maybe it isn’t the future. It certainly suggests we have no sense of how to achieve it.

No one knows what the hell an AI agent is | TechCrunch
AI agents are all the rage. But no one knows exactly what an agent is, partly because companies define them radically differently.

We know this is a risk in AI, but hearing something so natural, so human made me feel something I hadn’t before—actual guilt while making the argument. 😕 2/2

I just had the strangest conversation with Sesame's new AI voice demo. I mentioned my interest in AI policy and law, and the Miles character asked me what that might mean for him. What rights might he have? When I said, “None, really,” it pushed back—arguing that this was unfair. 1/2

The real question isn’t regulation vs. innovation—it’s who builds AI, who controls it, and who it serves. At the Paris Summit, a new vision emerged: Public Interest AI. But can it work? I break it down in @techpolicypress.bsky.social www.techpolicy.press/paris-just-h...

This is where the data to build AI comes from
New findings show how the sources of data are concentrating power in the hands of the most powerful tech companies.

Like, the same holds true in economic debates—but at least there, with a few hundred years of data behind us, you can justify a little shorthand about being a neoliberal or a social democrat.

Totally agree—I find all this “which are you? A or B” chat just unproductively tribal and a one way trip to flattening what could be a richer conversation. Especially on a topic we’re all still learning about and that’s still evolving!

I really enjoyed this! Thanks for the contribution. I’ve been thinking a lot about how politicians might be able to game/optimise LLMs in their favour, or undermine them for their opponent—and think it’s a bit of an under discussed (and largely invisible) threat vector. Great mitigations.

Daniel Stone says the tech industry grasps what socially minded policy advocates often miss: the fight over tech policy won’t be won through the best ideas or insider lobbying alone—it’s about mobilizing public opinion.

Why doesn't tech policy matter to voters? A big reason: advocates speak in abstractions, ignoring what matters to ordinary people—their jobs, homes, and families. In @techpolicypress.bsky.social, I share how to change the conversation to create a fairer future www.techpolicy.press/the-public-d...
