Every time Falco is mentioned I just end up thinking about how he has the best grave ever. It has a list of his hits on it! It’s so extra, I love it.
Falco’s amazing grave.

TIL the writer of Wicked (the book that became the musical and later, the films) got the idea for the original book from, of all things, the James Bulger murder.
“He was also inspired by the 1993 murder of James Bulger, in which both victim and perpetrators were young children.

‘Everyone was asking: how could those boys be so villainous? Were they born evil or were there circumstances that pushed them towards behaving like that? It propelled me back to the question of evil that bedevils anybody raised Catholic. ‘“

Sad news about Sam Neill. This film of his is a fun little gem, where he plays a clergyman who channels his previous life as a dog every time he drinks Hungarian Tokaji.

I’ll be playing Leicester’s legendary underground club night Tube Bar next month (23rd May) alongside a few other pals. Tickets available here: www.gigantic.com/tube-bar-tic...
Tube Bar returns on Saturday 23rd May 2026, 8pm - 1am.
Joining Turk and Chris will be guest DJs Alison, Dan, Glyn and Sarah from @hoohaleicester

We will also be opening an hour earlier at 8pm to cater for all of those who like to dance and yet still be tucked up in bed before midnight.

For those who don’t know about the Tube Bar we first operated between 1995 and 2005 as a secret underground cult nightclub. You wouldn’t have seen much advertising as we didn’t need it - we operated successfully on word of mouth. After a long break we made a successful comeback in 2025.

Our music policy blends both obscure and popular underground music from 1946-2026. We play music from these genres;
Post-Punk / Proper Indie (not landfill) / C86 / Jamaican Ska and Two Tone / 60s Mod and Mod Revival / 50s R&B / Punk / Retro Pop / Hammond Groovers / 60s Garage and Psychedelia / French Pop / Motown / Kosmische / Crooners / Proto-punk / Rock n Roll / Northern Soul / TV Themes and Easy Listening to mention a few...

No two nights are ever the same. We don’t repeat play the same old anthems. Our nights are always original and different from each other. We seamlessly blend music from different eras and genres together, some obscure, some very popular but all dance floor fillers!

We also promote and play local bands in our sets like Prolapse, Crazyhead and the Crystal Teardrop. The Tube Bar is credited with the rediscovery of the local anthem the ‘Leicester Fiesta’ which we love to give a spin and always guarantees a full dance floor.

At present our events are bi-monthly but they will become more regular next year. The Tube Bar will also start co-promoting some local gigs with Ian Magic Teapot in the near future.

There is no place else like the Tube Bar - anywhere. We have the best people - the best venue and the best tunes.

We are the biggest and best underground music night in Leicester. If you know - you know.

We are the Tube Bar! You are the general public!

Bricking it a bit but I’ll be spinning some Francophone and adjacent records at The Piper in St Leonard’s On Sea tonight from 9pm (I’ll be doing a few half hour sets throughout the night, first at 9:30pm). Designed the posters too. Melanie Pain from Nouvelle Vague will be performing upstairs too.

For new releases, it was a 12 mile trip up the road to the much missed Coliseum in Porthmadog. Saw Return To Oz there when in hindsight I was far too young for it. But if you didn’t mind waiting, Theatr Ardudwy in my hometown (now closed) would stick films on, six months later. #childhoodcinema

(I actually own a copy of this. It was the theme tune to his Summertime Special programme. The B-side is a vaguely Italo Disco sounding cover of the closing theme from The Family Ness. I am not making this up)

Some of the newer ones have a speed change button but our one has this - you have to manually move the belt up and down the round motor thing to change speed. It’s faffy if it pings off though - there’s a knack to it. You may need to get a preamp too. (Yes I do need to do the dusting haha)

Once saw this Facebook comment that listed “proper English food” and it’s lived rent free in my head ever since. The least appetising thing I’ve ever read.
Some old fella on Facebook’s comment: “ I class 'English' food as: Marinated hearings, salmon cream flan, kidney and bacon soup, mackerel with lemon stuffing, cod bake, savoury cheese log, blue cheese and pear salad, braised celery, cauliflower surprise, savoury filled pancakes, farmhouse pie, pepper-pot beef, boiled salt beef, hare with prunes, chicken hot pot, summer pudding and hot rice pudding with fruits, to name just a few, to fill a good
'English' person and visitor's belly, with good English foods purchased. !!!”

As for worldbuilding detail, a friend pointed this out to me:
“there's always an extra detail you notice on a re-viewing. Last time, for me, it was realising what is being shown with the cars always bottoming out and grinding the ramp when exiting the police station. Land is so expensive that they don't have space for a shallower ramp”

The Lord Harlech era BBFC card might just be my favourite bit of design ever. I once did a version of my own for a vinyl night I run, also adding a bit of Pearl & Dean in there.
A flyer I once quickly put together combining the old Pearl & Dean intro and the Lord Harlech er BBFC card.

It still blows my mind that that short was made in 1968. It feels so much more *modern* than that, in this weirdly out-of-time coked-up fashionista way. If you didn’t know better you’d think it was made in the mid-80s at the earliest, easily.
Toby Dammit is fucking incredible. You should watch it. Plus it’s only 40 minutes long. I’ve still not even watched the other segments of Spirits Of The Dead. But why would you when you know nothing will top this?

Even though that sounds like the best film ever made, I’m told it’s just “ok”. Casati is worth reading about, really ahead of her time, much like Henry Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey. Like Paget, she also died penniless. www.koturltd.com/blog/2016/10...

I don’t know how long they’ve been doing this - it’s been a while since I’ve bought a Masters of Cinema Bluray - but having a disclaimer to tell people to turn off motion smoothing on their tellies before watching is something every home film release should have. Nice one.
A disclaimer to remind people to turn off motion smoothing on their televisions before watching the film in the booklet with the Masters Of Cinema Bluray release of VIY (1967). So it doesn’t end up looking like an episode of Corrie.
