Today I'm releasing my new single, 'Marsha', which honours the participants in the Stonewall Riots, including Marsha P. Johnson. It's not a radical departure from my normal style, but it turns up the drones a bit, and adds some acoustic flourishes, including a string quartet. Hope you enjoy!

"On Wishing a Happy Birthday to my Ex-Boyfriend". A poem I wrote, yesterday.
"On Wishing a Happy Birthday to my Ex-Boyfriend". A poem I wrote, yesterday.

There was a time
your name lit up
my phone
& my whole body
answered.

I won’t pretend
it wasn’t devotion—
stupid, young,
entirely mine—
but I won’t erase
someone I once
learned by heart.

We were so
different.
Nothing in common
but the damage
& the doves
we swallowed.

No arguments,
just the slow drift
into something
like friendship,
a kind of afterlife
where no one left
with the good towels.

In 2009—
seven years on—
I opened the book
I’d shelved
half-read
in grief.

Your letter slipped out—
tucked there
like a seed
you trusted I’d find
when I was ready
to turn the page.

I'd never seen it.
But I keep it still:
your apology,
folded into the breath
between two chapters.

Sometimes I read it.
Not to ache—
just to remember
how even the ending
was written in love.

Happy birthday, love.

If it rained today,
I hope it rained
like it did
over the house
in Longsight—
low, and forgiving.

I'd been thinking of writing something like this. Chinese audiences were mostly responsible for my previous album outselling x4 anything I've released before, and a handful of my tracks have racked up 1.2+ million streams on Chinese streaming services, all totally without promotion in the territory.

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy

Grammar nerd thought: perhaps once a month I smile thinking of how Leonard Cohen followed his album "Death of a Ladies’ Man" with his poetry volume "Death of a Lady’s Man". Quite envious of that: the sly humour in that apostrophe change. I often wish to do something similar with two of my releases 🙃
