Also the lakefront is so gorgeous— an advantage over Chicago is the little ridge/ bluff that provides a bit of drama, plus no eight lane highway

If a whole city is zoned for a single story aboveground but unlimited habitable volume below ground, would the correct response to somebody saying it sucks to live underground be, “well it’s better than nothing…the beauty of the market is you can choose not to live there”?? Even if the former is…

There was a point when property taxes came up and a commissioner said “but that’s not what we’re here to talk about, lowering property taxes” and it was all I could do not to jump up and shout

At Oak Park’s plan commission meeting on its middle housing zoning reforms. Largest applause of the night for a commissioner’s question about how it will affect single family home values. Second largest on a comment about how Oak Park can’t afford to pay for subsidized housing.

Trump's HUD has turned its authoritarian gaze upon - of all targets - Wells Fargo, announcing an investigation of the bank on the *putative* basis that its special purpose credit programs may violate the FHA. What's missing? A lot! 1. Any discussion of... www.hud.gov/sites/defaul...

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

One thing about Copenhagen is that there's tons of dense housing but you *never* find it fronting a busy road with cars racing past, which describes about 90% of the apartments in the US. They manage to make it feel tucked away, private, cozy. (These are all from Sluseholmen, my dream neighborhood.)

I don’t want my daughter going to school system run by someone who had these kinds of notes written about him and decided legal threats and absurd deflections were how to handle it. How would he handle overseeing investigations into the same sorts of allegations?

It's limited to small-scale residential, which maybe I should say explicitly, and stratifies the sample to get different eras. But yes that was a challenging one lol. One reason I like it is to knock the "come see the building" blinders off of me!

Agreed, which is why I’m glad there are so many YIMBY orgs pushing on both sides—in IL, AHIL endorsed tenant protections in PRO and has supported policies to create more income restricted housing. At least in Chicago, I think that’s more the norm than the exception among the urbanist set

YEEEEEESSSS, Shadowal blocks on the stairwell of 4124 N. California, ca. 1959

Gray-brown rectangular blocks with a trapezoid relief, laid to make stacks of hexagons.Black and white ad for Shadowal by Utah Concrete Pipe Co.
Copy reads:
Shadowal THE CONCRETE MASONRY WITH 1,000 FACES. Recesses in the face of each Shadowal unit can be arranged in an almost limitless number of dramatic sculptured patterns. And notably when multiple young women complained that the recently-former CTU comms director/their supervisor was harassing them, those young women were also retaliated against, fired and placed on the city’s do not hire list for completely indefensible reasons
