My goal today is writing a document, tentatively named "How to make a better cup of coffee with quantum vibrations." If you grind your own coffee beans and can offer feedback, I will need readers.

Anyways, now that I have the boilerplate for the mobile app I wanted to build, I think I'll go Old School, pick a tutorial and maybe read an O'Reilly book or watch videos. Cause this code is fucking atrocious, and slow. They really did train those agents on Stack Overflow.

Maybe I'm just a cranky old dev, complaining since newbies starting getting fancy with async frameworks for single page apps. 20 years ago, every amazing dev I knew had a pet project or two. Now I suspect many have a dozen apps with 0 to 1 users.

I remember building a non-trivial application before Rails hit 1.0, and being amazed at how much faster this was. With AI, I'm getting a lot of boilerplate (cool!), and ludicrous amounts of heinous code - untested spaghetti mixing 4 concerns in a single function. Is this what passes for progress?

Daniel Haran @danielharan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Boilerplate... that should be reduced to a maximum, and handled by a code generator, no? Refactoring... should be deterministic, in the IDE. Most algorithms? In the core libraries. I remember the days where we cared about DRY - don't repeat yourself! We used to believe that verbose code was bad.

Every few months I try an AI coding agent as old peers tell me it's "really good now," and I still don't see it. There's one intuition I can't shake, though: that anything an AI can code well is because there are so many examples that it should be abstracted by now.

I don't know how much of this is due to rankings being absolute trash, and how much is due to reputations taking generations to reflect reality. They may also have some very weak departments, while I only hear about good work.

My family held one local university in high esteem, so I always assumed they were among the best. Nowadays most of the pertinent public intellectuals in fields I read about, and most of the really hard deep tech is coming out of a smaller university that's usually ranked in the bottom decile. Hmm.

What then? We call that machine learning. There's a deeply dishonest argument by AI proponents responding to anti-AI concerns: but what about all the medical breakthroughs? But those aren't LLMs and generative AI. We don't need IP theft and massive data centers to do image analysis.

I went to a startup incubator event tonight, hoping to see interesting companies. A few are bucking the AI trend and building real "deep tech", e.g. camera sensors doped to detect single photons, advanced metal recycling, etc. It made me more hopeful, tbh.

So, Costco relayed that consumers complained about nail varnish aromas on Driscoll’s berries, back in 2025. Did... they not immediately send samples to the CFIA and/or independent labs? If consumers notice, the pickers have to be bathing in these pesticides. Wtf?

This is mass psychosis. 4 billion revenue, 8 billion operating loss, 42 billion in net loss. Plans to spend 500 billion more on infrastructure. And this is going to be worth 2 trillion?

That would be fantastic. Banff, then continue to BC? And/or Regina and Winnipeg. Basically if we have a team that proves they can build, we should keep them together as long as possible.

If AI works, you won't need 10,000 people to implement it. But it won't work, so we'll be training people to keep the bubble alive - a caste of scribes and evangelists that reassure us it's happening, and we just need more faith. Feed the data centers natural gas, to fix climate change.

Daniel Haran @danielharan.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Everything is computer, Canadian version. AI is a marketing term, and I wish a single journalist asked Evan Solomon if he thinks LLMs will keep getting better or be replaced by another paradigm. The party that wants to build pipelines to fight climate change doesn't recruit independent thinkers.
