These people are so fucking weird and cultish. I know it's all kayfabe and grandiose storytelling, but everyone taking nutrition and health advice from a raspy stick of jerky is a certifiable gullible fool.

Québec has had 0 recorded covid deaths since July 19th. There were only 2 other weeks at 0 covid deaths prior, both this year. We're entering an election campaign in which many will vote based on their covid trauma, utterly oblivious to what the data suggests.

I mean... this isn't exactly unprecedented? This is the USA saying "hold my beer" just after the UK did Brexit - but there are lots of other examples throughout history of empires dying through a combination of heavy metal poisoning, elite decadence and military idiocy.

The woke data for gas prices, if anyone cares:
Graph of gasoline prices from the Energy Information Administration.

Prices per gallon have stayed between 2 and 4 dollars a gallon since 2005, with prices currently above 4.25. The only other significant deviation from that range was in 2022, hitting $5/gallon.

Weekly data is available on the webpage in table format, below the graph.

Some of these speaker descriptions use a lot of flowery language to disguise their intellectual and moral indigence. Besides Ben Shapiro, I'd be ashamed to share a stage with Gad Saad or James Lindsay.
Screenshot of the speaker description on the symposium web page:

"Gad Saad is a provocateur in the truest sense, an evolutionary psychologist-turned-cultural critic who takes aim at ideological conformity, political correctness, and what he calls the “suicidal empathy” of the modern West, delivering sharp, unapologetic commentary that consistently challenges the mainstream narrative."Screenshot of the speaker description on the symposium web page:

"James Lindsay is a relentless critic of ideological capture, known for dissecting and challenging the influence of critical theory, identity politics, and institutional orthodoxy with sharp, confrontational analysis that has made him a polarizing force in modern cultural debate."

Here's the latest example in La Presse, which reiterates the idea that the plaintiff couldn't get a non-gendered haircut.

Really baffled by some journal articles again. Why use multivariate modelling when all the variables are pointing in the same direction!? As always, the "quality" definition is also dictated by old industrial rules... www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Graph shows two spectra lines, for 1000nm to 2500nm, with the one labelled "Higher quality" being slightly above the "inferior quality", and essentially having the same shape.

ChatGPT gets chocolate wrong again- a beginner on a FB forum asked the bot for help, and, well, there are obvious issues. My recipe for 1kg of 80% chocolate is 800g nibs, 200g sugar. Legally speaking, however... in Canada you can have 5% dairy!
Screenshot of text: "Anything different in making dark as opposed to milk chocolate?
Chat GPT suggested this recipe for an 80% dark chocolate, but I am not sure it has enough sugar? Since I am using a specialty milk there has to be milk powder in the recipe.
Here is what I have for 1kg 80% dark chocolate:
700gr cocoa paste.
100 gr cocoa butter.
100 powdered milk.
100 sugar."

No wonder Conservatives hate universities: only people with no understanding of history, feminist theories or critical analysis can take these shallow, reactionnary rationalisations seriously. Like anti-vaxxers, utterly oblivious to how bad things used to be.
Screenshot of transcript of NYT podcast, "Did Liberal Feminism Ruin the Workplace?"

Douthat: And a big part of your argument is that the institutions of American life or Western life, since the feminist revolution, have basically said to women: Yes you can join up. You can have the jobs you want. You can have the equality you want. But we will not accommodate ourselves, too. What you just defined as the greatest female distinctive, right? So you have to, in effect, become as men in order to enter the professional classes.

Sargeant: And when you aren’t, it’s kind of a personal hobby. You hear that language of personal choice, not only on the left with regard to abortion, but for conservatives in opposition to things like SNAP benefits for unmarried women: Well, you chose to have this baby while you were poor, and everyone knows you could have chosen differently — when that could entail not having sex or killing the baby in the womb after sex has been had.

AI will be worth 100 trillion by 2030, all that's needed is a few more data centres to hammer out these few remaining bugs.
Google AI Overview for search term "fruits that end in g." The AI summary follows:

The most common fruit that ends in "g" is the mango. Other fruits that end in "g" include guava and longan.
Mango: A popular tropical fruit with smooth skin and sweet, fleshy pulp.
Guava: A round or oval fruit with fragrant pink or white flesh, often eaten fresh.
Longan: A small, round fruit with a sweet, translucent flesh, known as the "dragon's eye".

"97% of wildfires in Nova Scotia are started by humans" That data is from 1990-2009, and was originally published in this report, which includes some important context: www.novascotia.ca/natr/forestp...
Fire Causes
In many provinces a large number of forest fires are caused
by lightning. In Nova Scotia only an average 3 per cent of
fires start in this way. The remaining 97 per cent are caused
by the activities of people, mostly accidental but sometimes
deliberate. About one-third of person-caused fires are
classed as “residential.” These fires are caused by people
engaged in activities _ like debris and grass burning _ on
and around their property. Another major cause is arson,
which accounts for about one quarter of the person-caused
fires in this province in an average year. The cause of the
fire is usually determined by an investigation after the fire
has been declared out.

Interesting that @mark-carney.bsky.social does not publish everything on Bluesky, and in particular did not push this message about Iran, which was on X.
Screenshot of tweet by Canada's PM Mark Carney: "Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security, and Canada has been consistently clear that Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

While U.S. military action taken last night was designed to alleviate that threat, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile. Stability in the region is a priority.

Canada calls on parties to return immediately to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis. As G7 leaders agreed in Kananaskis, the resolution of the Iranian crisis should lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza."

The most infuriating is the adherence to a "gold standard" set out in 1959: surpassing a physician's diagnostic accuracy. While that IS important, the paper mentions accuracy at ordering the most appropriate diagnostic test. That seems... useful and important?
We next evaluated the ability of o1-preview to select the next diagnostic test in the NEJM CPCs.
Two physicians scored the suggested test plan produced by o1-preview (agreement on 113/132
cases [86%], κ=0.28), with respect to the actual management of the patient described in the
CPC. The proportion of agreements was high, but the kappa was low due to severe class
imbalance. In 87.5% of cases, o1-preview selected the correct test to order, in another 11% of
cases the chosen testing plan was judged by the two physicians to be helpful, and in 1.5% of
cases it would have been unhelpful (Figure 3). Examples are shown in Table 2.

It appears US weather forecast accuracy is also degrading very fast, a predictable result of missing data and forecasters.
Screenshot of Facebook post by meteorologist Chris Zelman WALB, "GFS (American) weather model (in red) is turning less accurate likely due to loss of meteorologists and data at NWS & NOAA. We are watching how DOGE cuts affect weather forecasting in real time."

The graph includes a title of "5-day NHEMI [20°-80° N] 500hPa Z Anomaly Correlation", and a last verification date of 12Z04MAY2025 by @RyanMaue"

The performance for 3 models is shown on the graph, with summary statistics given at top:
ECMWF: Last 90 days: 0.941 | 30 days: 0.930 | 7 days: 0.905
GFS: Last 90 days: 0.902 | 30 days: 0.884 | 7 days: 0.850
AIFS: Last 90 days: 0.945 | 30 days: 0.939 | 7 days: 0.919

The GFS accuracy is shown in red and clearly below the two others, with one small dip below 0.8 in mid-March and a clearer sustained divergence since mid-April, leading to two more days below 0.8 since May.

As a chocolate maker of French origin, I would be remiss not to share that this contraption, used to cut and inspect cacao beans, is best known as a guillotine. A high-trust supply chain means I never have to use one. Sometimes their existence alone can keep people honest.
Cacao bean cutter, aka as a guillotine, on a background of more beans. The name is due to the blade that cuts beans being on an angle, like the notorious French invention.

The cutter is open with the blade showing one side of the 50 beans split lengthwise, but obscuring the left. Bean colours are mostly brown and reddish, with some whiter beans typical of criollo genetics. Two over-fermented and darker beans are also visible.

The recent cuts make a lot more sense when we take their agenda seriously. Trump's declarations that he'd be dictator for a day make a lot more sense in this context. He's got enough rhetorical cover to do all the authoritarian garbage he's doing now.
Article screenshot of two paragraphs, as follows: "Yarvin suggests that a would-be American autocrat should campaign on and win an electoral mandate for an authoritarian program. They should purge the federal bureaucracy in a push Yarvin has anagrammatized as Rage (for “retire all government employees”).

They should simply ignore any court rulings that seek to constrain them. They should bring Congress to heel, in part by mobilizing their populist base against recalcitrant lawmakers. And liberal or mainstream media organizations and universities should be summarily closed."

Roasting cacao from Chanthaburi, Thailand, today. Its profile is unique, and a light roast lets sour green apple and starfruit shine over the dried fruit and spice. Monday I should receive beans from Reserva Zorzal in the Dominican Republic- a more classic chocolate with some red berries.

Quebec weekly excess mortality graph for people 0-49. The line is very spiky / noisy, and generally around 15% above the expected baseline.

I reached out to a Zionist friend who shared this image, which implies all of Israel and even Gaza were attacked. It's a visual metaphor of Iranian missile strikes that wipe Israel off the map, while all mainstream reports I see discuss attacks concentrated on military bases and the Mossad HQ. WTF
Screenshot of Instagram post by @tabletmag and @michaelrapaport about the Iranian missile attack on Israel. The map is full of pins, covering nearly all of Israel and Gaza.

I am now on page 35 and reading stats about cyclists... how can 565 collisions causing at least one injury result in 562 injuries?

Got my city's police report to see if they had stats about motor vehicle incidents. The numbers don't make sense. The 3.9% change comes out to 3.75 when I use their numbers. But there are much bigger red flags here. spvm.qc.ca/upload/02/SP...

In 1978, Natural Resources Canada prepared estimates for how often certain levels of rainfall are expected in every region of Canada. The data was released in 2016 and modified in 2022. Besides climate change, there's some statistical chicanery: open.canada.ca/data/en/data...
"In many studies it has been shown that hydrometeorological data fit very closely to the double exponential extreme value distribution known generally as the "Gumbel" distribution. If selected from a large enough set of observations to be considered infinite, theoretically a series of extreme data will fit this distribution and the following numerical expression can be applied:
Үт = ӯ + Κτσ T
where YT is the amount of rainfall equalled or exceeded only once in return period T,
y is the mean of the annual maximum series,
σ is the standard deviation from the mean of the annual maximum series, and
KT is a frequency factor dependent upon the number of years of record, the return period, and the type of assumed distribution (Gumbel in this article)."

Québec Covid data is out... it looks from wastewater that a big wave is coming. Over 100 people are entering hospital with Covid every day, and about 1600 are currently in hospitals with a diagnostic. About 40 people a week are dying. www.inspq.qc.ca/covid-19/don...
Covid wastewater signal for Montreal. Most of 2024 has been flat, with peaks in December 2023 lasting until January, and another in the last week.

The *world wide* web sounds like a fantastic idea, honestly.

Québec's Covid variant landscape shows KP.3.1.1 quickly gaining ground, while XEC still isn't visible for CDC weeks 33 and 34.
Bar graph of Covid variant prevalence in Québec, showing a decreasing JN.1, a quickly increasing KP3.1.1 and barely detectable unclassified variants which would include XEC.

Because this meme keeps showing up, I have to say that we do have a very convincing study. "The supply of new market rate units triggers moving chains that quickly reach middle- and low-income neighborhoods and individuals." www.doria.fi/bitstream/ha...
Black and white cartoon of a woman pointing at an empty shelf, with a text bubble reading: "This is where we keep case studies where increasing supply of luxury homes solved affordable housing crisis"
