Maybe journals should advertise timing up front, to manage expectations. Desk rejection in 30 minutes or less, or your APC is free!

Putting on my editor in chief hat, it's like we can't win. Rejections take too long, bad. Rejections happen too quickly, also bad? What is the Goldilocks amount of time for a desk rejection?

A scientist gave a scientific talk - on scientific work he has led for 5+ years - on a scientific topic at a scientific institution. And apparently it's so newsworthy that Politico had to write about it? Talk was only possible thanks to "academic freedom", apparently 🙄. What a world we live in 😵‍💫.

“I’m sorry, I only peer review for scientific society journals” is a perfectly reasonable stance. It is, however, a weird reason to decline to review for a scientific society journal.

#AcademicSky #EduSky if you do an interview with reporters for Gannett, there's a good chance your quotes will get handed over to an AI agent to produce more "stories" with those quotes without further input. Here's a quick list of places that do not use AI. go.bsky.app/8cn1XfT

There are ways to pay peer reviewers that improve peer review (transparency, payment contingent on quality) and ways to pay peer reviewers that will worsen peer review (lack of transparency, payment regardless of the quality of the review)

NIH's Aug 2026 proposal would scrap exact scores and percentiles for three broad bins (top = top 25%). With funding rates at 5% or lower, too much then rides on administrative discretion. It devalues peer review and is a deterrent to engage. Tell NIH before Oct 13. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...
