The Great Antonio was mourned by more than 3,000 people, but “the most repeated narrative of Antonio Barichievich’s life” leaves much unsaid. Here, Daniel Allen Cox pieces together forgotten archives to uncover the man behind the myth: thewalrus.ca/the-great-antonio

"He kept office hours at the Dunkin’ Donuts across the street from his apartment in a building on rue Beaubien. With powdered sugar on their fingers, the staff collected his mail and took phone messages for him. Antonio would return calls from a nearby payphone"

Antonio Barichievich, a.k.a. the Great Antonio, made a name for himself by pulling buses, wrestling bears, and telling impossible stories. Here, writer Daniel Allen Cox revisits the life—and lore—of a Montreal legend: thewalrus.ca/the-great-antonio

“I admire people who don’t need or seek society’s approval,” says photographer Sylvain Laquerre. “I knew I was dealing with history when I was by [Antonio’s] side, even if I didn’t know the significance our friendship would have after he was gone.” thewalrus.ca/the-great-antonio

Again - growing up, "they" was the right pronoun to use for unspecified gender. I never had an issue using it until I moved over here and suddenly I was told to use the ugly as fuck "he/she" frankenword. I refused, but it wasn't trying to get paid either.

Even in LGBTQIA+ / queer publications I have been told using "they" pronouns, or switching pronouns for someone who uses multiple is "confusing" and we should stick to what people are familiar with. Censorship of trans+ identities has got to stop!

As a non-binary person who uses they/them pronouns, I honestly think it's getting worse right now. Even at my job, where all my colleagues are therapists who you would expect to be good with pronouns, I get misgendered a lot. And a number of folks don't seem to care about fixing it.

A mini documentary about I Felt the End Before It Came is now premiering at the Winnipeg International Writers Festival. 🥳 There's some behind the scenes of the five wild years it took to write the book, and of course, some Montreal weirdness: thinairfestival.ca/user/1159/

Marquette, Michigan's daily newspaper runs reviews of new arrivals at the local public library, and this one is sending me 😳 My book is really getting out there.
The collection of essays in author Daniel Cox’s I Felt the End Before it Came are at once fanciful and pragmatic, heartfelt and heartbreaking. In a style reminiscent of David Sedaris, Cox winds his narratives through personal history with intent, if not always ease. The lead essay, The Letter, introduces the culture of the Jehovah’s Witnesses for any unfamiliar and Cox’s relationship with the order and the people in his life he had to leave behind. These notes carry through the rest of the collection, as Cox describes experiencing Y2K with the backdrop of the Witness’ apocalyptic mindset, the challenge of continuing the relationship with his mother, and his struggle with alcoholism. I Felt the End Before it Came is a raw, personal experience, recommended for readers of Sedaris and fans of Paris is Burning.

For the Globe and Mail, I wrote about stuttering, almost saying no to narrating my audiobook, and getting rid of ideas of perfection that have nothing to do with us. www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/books/…

Author Daniel Allen Cox discards perfection in narrating his audiobook
Narrating the memoir I Felt The End Before It Came taught Cox more about speech and voice than the writer had learned in years

What a thing to wake up to, in Montreal Review of Books: "A captivating, richly layered text that dismantles any reductive ideas readers may hold about indoctrination, departures, comings-out, and the practice of memoir-writing itself." 😭 😭
