Beira's Place was founded specifically to be trans exclusionary because the Edinburgh center was run by a trans woman. It had nothing to do with supporting women and everything to do with ensuring trans people are pushed out of society while hijacking a sensitive issue to do so.

It's incredibly clear that Rowling is going to lead with this org because it's a rape shelter. It'll be a media circus. The UK press will attack Amnesty as defaming a rape crisis center. Nevermind that Rowling and her ilk incited threats to Edinburgh Rape Crisis center b/c a trans woman worked there

JK Rowling through her TERF organization, Beira's Place have sent Amnesty International a demand letter seeking a full retraction of their report, a public apology, and a bar to future criticism of gender critical groups as anti rights orgs. If they don't comply, they'll commence legal action.
The first page of a formal, typed legal letter dated 14 July 2026. It is addressed to the leadership of Amnesty International UK: Helen Horton (Chair, Amnesty International UK Section), Sandy Ruthven (Chair, Amnesty International UK Charitable Trust), and Kerry Moscogiuri (Chief Executive). The contact information and phone numbers in the top-right corner are redacted with a large black block, and a footer at the bottom is also blacked out.
The subject line reads: "BEIRA’S PLACE | AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL UK PUBLICATION DATED 8 JULY 2026".
The body text states that the sender acts on behalf of Beira’s Place, a sexual violence support service for women in Edinburgh and the Lothians. It asserts the legal right under the Equality Act 2010 to provide single-sex services and references the Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland v Scottish Ministers to define "woman" by biological sex. The letter strongly objects to page 20 of a newly published Amnesty report titled "A growing threat; the anti-rights movement in the UK", which allegedly categorizes Beira's Place as an "anti-rights organization." The letter calls this categorization "grossly offensive and entirely without foundation."The second page of the formal legal letter, maintaining the same clean, typed layout with a heavy black redaction block covering the footer at the bottom.
Under the heading "Defamation and Malicious Publications (Scotland) Act 2021", the text argues that labeling Beira's Place as "anti-rights" is defamatory and legally actionable. It claims the report has caused severe damage, including threatening correspondence and a 600% spike in hostile website traffic. The text notes that Beira's Place, with the support of its founder J.K. Rowling, will not allow its reputation to be tarnished.
Under the heading "Remedies", the letter lists legal demands to avoid litigation, including:
A permanent withdrawal of the Amnesty report and its methodology.
A public letter of apology on the homepage of Amnesty’s website, apologizing to Beira's Place, its staff, and service users, as well as acknowledging the protected belief that sex is real and immutable. The final page of the typed legal letter, featuring a large black redaction box covering the signature block in the middle and another covering the footer at the bottom.
The page contains the conclusion of the legal demands, including a third remedy requiring Amnesty to commission an external investigation into how the report was published.
The letter warns that if Amnesty does not agree to these terms, counsel will be instructed to prepare for court action. It concludes with a note that J.K. Rowling, as founder of Beira's Place, will make a formal complaint to the Charity Commission or other appropriate regulator and supports other listed gender-critical organizations taking their own legal actions. It signs off with "Yours faithfully" before the blacked-out signature block.

It turns out British MP Tonia Antoniazzi has tabled an early day motion that condemns the Amnesty report depiction of the anti-rights movement in the UK. The motion cites that "gender critical belief" is protected under the Equality Act 2010 as well as last year's supreme court ruling.
Black text on white background which says: [Bold] Motion text [Normal]
That this House expresses extreme concern at Amnesty International UK's report entitled A Growing Threat: the Anti-Rights Movement in the UK, published on 8 July; condemns its depiction and listing of organisations defending the rights of women, girls, children, and gay and bisexual people as anti-rights on the basis of them being gender critical; further condemns its depiction and listing of organisations of parents and of clinicians as promoting conversion practices; notes that organisations depicted as supposedly anti-rights includes many grassroots women’s rights organisations doing vital work domestically and internationally with vulnerable women and children, and a rape crisis centre and support service for female survivors of male violence; further notes that gender critical belief is a protected belief under the Equality Act 2010 and reflects the views of the majority of the public; also notes that it is perfectly legitimate to organise around the protected characteristic of sex and to offer single-sex spaces, as clarified by the recent Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland vs The Scottish Government; recognises that such organisation, work and services are fundamentally important; also condemns the report for making unevidenced characterisations; acknowledges the damaging impact of such baseless accusations for the small grassroots charities and organisations listed; and calls on Amnesty International to withdraw the report, issue a formal public correction and apology acknowledging the reputational harm, and pledge that Amnesty staff who hold gender critical beliefs can express such beliefs without fear of bullying or harassment.

Really crazy to learn that JK Rowling once worked at Amnesty International as a bilingual researcher but she was fired because she was too busy writing books during work hours instead of documenting war crimes in French speaking Africa.
A screenshot of an article snippet featuring a photograph of J.K. Rowling credited to Twocoms / Shutterstock.com. Below the photo, a heading reads "J.K. Rowling" followed by "Net worth: $1 billion." Two paragraphs of text follow: "Before she was a best-selling author, 'Harry Potter' creator J.K. Rowling lost her job as a secretary for the London office of Amnesty International because she was caught writing creative stories on her computer while on the clock. She used her severance to begin Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Today, Rowling is a billionaire, thanks to the book series that has sold over 500 million copies and a blockbuster film franchise."

all else aside, I think this was the start of a shift for a lot of people- realizing their government was absolutely capable of helping them, but actively choosing not to
There was a brief moment of relief from pandemic stimulus checks
This challenge is longstanding: More than 40% of households were not able to afford what they needed almost every year from 2014 to 2024, according to the report, except for in 2021 and
2022. During those years, Americans' bank accounts were boosted by federal stimulus checks and other forms of government aid meant to help with the COVID-19 pandemic recovery.
Yet the economic health of households relapsed in 2022, when inflation spiked and those federal assistance programs began to expire, shrinking the social safety net at the same time millions of families were moving closer to the edge.

Right-wing officials in Alberta used a little-known clause to ignore court rulings and constitutional human rights protections. But incredibly brave trans kids, families and activists are still fighting this attack on their lives and autonomy. Edited by @davidforbes.bsky.social
In a press release at the time, Smith justified the use.

“By invoking the notwithstanding clause, we’re ensuring that laws safeguarding children’s health, education and safety cannot be undone, that parents are fully involved in the major decisions affecting their children’s lives,”

“What that means in practice, is what we think has happened in Alberta,” Bennet Jensen, legal director at Egale, a 2SLGBTQI+ legal advocacy organization, told Trans News Network. “We have laws that are clearly unconstitutional, that clearly violate the rights of gender diverse young people, and in some cases adults as well. But our ability to go to court and get a result that would be meaningful for people on the ground—i.e. that the law is no longer in effect—has been limited.”

“The notwithstanding clauses are really unique and, frankly, a deeply unfortunate part of Canada's constitution.”“I’m a girl,” Doe three said, “and I (like most girls, I think) don’t want to go through boy puberty.”

So, for kids who seem more self-assured than I ever have, in-clinic gender-affirming hormone therapy will become an impossibility in the province. It is pushing the province in a dark direction.

Doe two, an agender ten-year-old, wrote at the time of filing the lawsuit that the changes had already contributed to a cultural shift.

“It has already changed how some teachers and kids treat me at school.” Doe two has struggled with being bullied at school and said that “visiting the gender clinic makes me feel safer and understood… I feel like I will have control over what happens to my body and be able to do what is right for me.”

Yet there is still light in Alberta, in the form of people like Pam Rocker, director and founder of Affirming Connections, an organization that works with places of worship across Alberta to become more affirming spaces for queer and trans folks. Rocker has also noticed a cultural shift. It’s no wonder, given Smith’s government’s sweeping attack on trans people. Smith and the United Conservatives have provided the scaffolding for that shift in Alberta’s culture.

Affirming Connections’s call to action claimed the ban “removes a parent’s ability to make healthcare choices for their children. In Alberta, doctors are already not allowed to perform health care on children without parental or guardian consent, so no change was necessary.”

w/ Alt text to this very important reporting from Noah. I think a lot about the public record, as a journalist and LIS student. Documentation of what is said in moments like these—from social media posts to emails—from those with power is essential to gather and preserve.
I asked the White House Tuesday morning if the president is mulling the use of nuclear weapons and if his apocalyptic Truth Social post is intended to convey such a threat. Six minutes later, at 11:19 a.m. eastern time, the White House press office declined to rule out the use of nuclear weapons. Instead, an unnamed official wrote, “We refer you to the President’s TRUTH on this inquiry.”

In a follow-up email, I wrote that the Truth Social post in question is ambiguous and that I would write in this article that “the White House press office declined to comment on whether the president is considering a nuclear attack on Iran,” and that it instead directed me to a post that threatens the imminent death of an entire civilization.

I also asked if the White House would like to provide additional comments or a statement. Two minutes later, at 11:45 a.m., the White House shared a statement attributable to press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “The Iranian regime has until 8PM Eastern Time to meet the moment and make a deal with the United States,” Leavitt said. “Only the President knows where things stand and what he will do.”
