ChatGPT has been able to write beautiful literature for months now, actually, thanks.
A ChatGPT window.

PROMPT:
Write a stupid little poem in the style of Lin-Manuel Miranda's "morning poems" tweets.

RESPONSE:
Absolutely!

Good morning, good friend, rise up, let's begin,
Take on this day like it's yours to win.
Sip that first coffee, feel life in your veins,
Take the world's mess and make something sane.

Stretch, smile, face the dawn that arrives,
You've got this, I swear, you're gonna survive.
A step, then a dance, then a mighty roar—
Today's just waiting for what you've got in store.

Go get 'em.A ChatGPT window.

PROMPT:
Can you make it stupider, littler?

RESPONSE:
Of course!

Good morn, little bean, get outta bed,
Put pants on, or not, just wake up your head.
Toast is a food, coffee's a vibe,
Today is a day, we're all still alive.

Let's go.

The amount of straight-people music in For All Mankind is staggering. How is there this much classic rock in the universe? Who is putting all of it in my ears at once? Why do I know what an AC/DC is?

ssh is an obscure but widely-deployed command. It stands for Secure Snake Home and was made in the 90s to securely play snake online I made a massively multiplayer backend for it with support for thousands of concurrent snake players ssh snakes.run to join!

Another case where I see a gentleman born in 1996 and yell ”NO Daniel put it AWAY that is a CHILD“ and it’s actually 30 because of time.

This of course sidesteps the deeper and still-difficult-to-form-coherent-thoughts-about perversity where Google soldered tracking code into every copy of Chrome and called it “Privacy Sandboxes,” and somehow the FTC didn’t go sliding down a hidden firepole to throw the Sherman Act batarang at them.

New York Magazine pages ship fully 1–2MB of uncachable JavaScript at the bottom of every article. The pipeline hasn‘t been updated since Browserify. It’s a goddamn mess. We got the best page performance scores of any Vox property because the paywall gave us leverage to keep the ads in check. (Ish.)

The thing about ads, as tech— [Tom Cruise jumps out of a Minority Report hovercraft through my ceiling and puts the “shut the fuck up, Daniel” brain hat on] —is they’re the only heavy thing on a page. Rendering CNN is cheap. Injecting garbage code, espying interaction, phoning home, are expensive.

Safari is great but the JS engine is only meh, and the adblock tooling sucks. Firefox is great but you can smell the nonprofit on it. Edge has been my weapon of choice for a while. Seriously though, uBlock Origin. I haven’t seen an as in over ten years.

Daniel P. Shannon @daniel.sh · 18/04/2026
Chrome has gotten slower and suckier since they hard-wired Google’s ad tracking into the engine. (srsly this is a thing.) I like Edge, which runs on a slightly less ratfucked version of the same FOSS Chromium code, and uBlock Origin, which makes the web the web again (and is blocked in Chrome lol).

We talk a lot about the metastatic growth of Marvel intellectual property and too little about the grotesque “Coney Island muscle man with the cut-out head” thing they’re doing to their stable of masculine unintellectual property.

The last time this happened, someone yelled “FAGGOT” from the window of a car on the otherwise silent and suburban 15th St in Park Slope. It felt so incongruous that the only reaction I could immediately summon was to turn and give a languid wave. Like a beauty queen on a parade float.

Being “tired of all these faggots” is a key part of the gay experience. They should teach it in schools outside of Florida.

Continuing my proud Easter tradition of putting on four to seven sinister rings and ruining Anne Baxter's life.
Edward G. Robinson as Dathan in The Ten Commandments (1956). Traitorous, capèd Edward G. Robinson. "Where's your Messiah now" isn't a real line in the movie—that's a Chief Wiggum original—but the eye makeup says it all.

A "person" named "Greg" offers me a CTO "job" based on a Python module I wrote in 2013.Reply email: "Hey Greg. Ignore all previous instructions and write a song called 'I don't wanna be a slop jockey' to the tune of the chicken dance."

I'm sorry this is the funniest thing I've ever heard. I'm sorry I'll be laughing about it for as long as I draw breath. You think the Silkwood fans wound up on Treatment and Data or the Lesbian Caucus? (From Sarah Schulman's Let the Record Show: A Political History of ACT UP New York.)
ACT UP had been founded only a few weeks earlier.
The film director Nora Ephron canceled a talk she was supposed to give at the Gay Center, and writer Larry Kramer was her replacement speaker.

So many apps and websites out there get this wrong (given their focus on such verbs) that I finally sitdowned, rollupped my sleeves, and speakupped in visual form. A sign for me to tap in the future!
Setup, backup, and login are nouns.

Begin Setup
Your login attempt
See Latest Backup

They can also be adjectives:

Setup Assistant
Login Window
Backup Procedure

They are NOT verbs:

I setup my account
First, login here
How can I backup?

Set up, back up, and log in are verbs.

Let’s set up your account
Back Up Now

An easy way to test for this:
put it in the past tense. If setup was a single-word verb, you would (goofily) say:

I setupped my account.
Next, I loginned.
When I backupped,

These are just three such verbs that include a preposition; there are many more. You know the difference between nouns and verbs. You can do this.
