Coelioxys slossoni ssp. slossoni is a sharptail cuckoo bee that doesn't seem to have a common name. A kleptoparasite, it lays eggs in the nest cells of leafcutting bees (like the White-footed Leafcutter recently posted) and its larva eat the host pollen. #Florida #invertebrate #insect #macro

Coelioxys slossoni ssp. slossoni - an interesting sharptail cuckoo bee is hanging upside down to a dead flower stem, clinging with its front four legs and mandibles, resting and waiting for rain to come in. The bee has a segmented rusty red thorax and legs, warm dark brown wings, black body, head, and antennae, with pale yellow in the eye. Though it has a bit of white fuzz in places, it does not have the hairs seen on pollen collecting bees, since it is klepto parasitic and its offspring steal the pollen from host bees. The background of this vertical frame is shades of green.

Love a plume moth. Like the moth equivalent of a dinosaur reconstructed from just the bones

Close photo of a plume moth resting on a brown wall near a porch light. The moth has a “skinny” look, with thin wings held out in a T-pose, and a thin abdomen that curls upward at the end. Its spindly legs somehow barely cling to the wall.

Here's a great bug Strawberry crown moth, Synanthedon bibionipennis. A beautiful wasp mimic visiting Showy Milkweed

A macro photo of a wasp-mimic moth visiting the star-shaped pink flower of a Showy Milkweed plant. The moth is striped in black and bright yellow, and closely resembles a yellow jacket. It has "clear" wings, with translucent patches in between black and yellow sections

An image of the Buddhist deity Acalanatha, remover of obstacles. He sits surrounded by fire on a lotus throne, legs crossed. He has dark blue skin and red hair, and his faced is contorted in a grimace of extreme determination. In his right hand he holds a sword to cut through delusion, in his left he holds a rope to bind the will with Preceptual action.

scene report from this weekend

The bright afternoon light shines through the tall trees on a small rocky stream, covered in freshly fallen golden yellow cottonwood leaves. The leaves fill the banks of the stream, some are floating in the clear water, some have come together to form small dams along the stream's course. The huge trunks of the cottonwoods overlook the scene
