One of the big things that’s being overlooked is that before chip+pin and contactless adoption in Europe, credit card acceptance was not nearly as widespread as it was in the U.S. Businesses in the U.S. had invested significantly more in legally credit card equipment.

I think we’ve hit the do dah tipping point here though. It’s been a long time since I wasn’t able to doot my phone on the do dah. I think Europe hit that point earlier bc of chip+PIN which was never a thing here.

I’m the same way. On occasion I’ve made it to the metro on my way to work when I realized I didn’t grab my wallet and I won’t bother to go back to get it. I usually just use my Apple Watch to pay for everything and my work ID I keep clipped to a belt loop.

I think I’ve never experienced this because if a waiter approaches me with a paper check and not the little mobile terminal doohickey to tap my phone on, my reaction would be to hand them my physical credit card. You know, common sense.

I also don't understand the focus on having your own bespoke trip planner. Most people (even those who don't live in the area) will already have a trip planning app they already use such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Transit.

I wonder if LACMTA is worried that mandatory upzoning around transit will make it even harder to build new transit projects because now you’re also adding in a zoning battle. Might be a better strategy to divide and conquer. Get the transit built, then fight about the zoning.

Yes. This is correct. Design and engineering influence the decisions we make. This is why "drive safe, be nice" PSAs are so useless. If you want ppl to make better decisions en masse, change the conditions. This means traffic calming, and cars with built in safeguards like speed governors.
