“So mitigation deterrence is not only about delay in a narrow sense. It is about the persistence of a particular imagination—one in which the future is always available to compensate for the present.” The Palimpsest of Delay - @daniadmiss.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/daniadmi...

Climate change is increasingly being framed not as something to prevent, but as something to manage. This essay explores the politics of that shift. daniadmiss.substack.com/p/carbon-aft...
Promotional graphic for an article titled “Carbon Afterlives (IV): Climate Realism and the End of the Green Consensus,” with the subtitle “The Administration of Instability After Net Zero.” The image shows a large projection of Earth above a conference space filled with people seated at tables, resembling a UN climate summit venue. Your phone isn't obsolete by accident. Replacement has become part of the system. A short essay on carbon lock-in, persistence, and why so many unsustainable infrastructures prove remarkably difficult to leave behind. daniadmiss.substack.com/p/carbon-aft...
Aerial view of a large dam and reservoir cutting through a mountainous landscape. Water levels appear low, exposing sections of the riverbed and surrounding infrastructure. The image accompanies an essay on carbon lock-in, planned obsolescence, and the persistence of carbon-intensive systems.

We all need the reminder that many of the changes needed to respond to the climate crisis aren’t a matter of giving something up, but getting something new: a better commute, a more comfortable home or a healthier life. That’s a fight anyone can sign up for. www.nationalobserver.com/2024/12/02/o...

You can’t keep a good climate solution down
The green future can be abundant, not diminished — and some of the necessary changes are already happening without much of a fight.

The Solent in Southern England is now heavily contaminated with 'forever chemicals' from sewage "This is one thing I don’t necessarily pin on the water companies because they don’t have the capacity to treat for them. That’s why they should be banned at source.” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A heat pump is supposed to feel local. But contemporary climate transition increasingly depends upon infrastructures of extraction, logistics, computation, cooling and energy demand that stretch far beyond the point of use. New Carbon Afterlives essay daniadmiss.substack.com/p/carbon-aft...

The Goldman Environmental Prize, often called the "Green Nobel," honors grassroots activists, it recognizes individuals for significant, sustained environmental protection efforts. The 2026 winners made history as all six awardees are women, announced by the Goldman Environmental Foundation.

What happens to carbon after extraction, combustion and “offsetting”? My new essay traces carbon through atmosphere, oceans, soil, finance, empire, & memory — asking what it means to live with the afterlife of fossil fuel modernity. daniadmiss.substack.com/p/carbon-aft...

Great example of continued bias in the energy forecaster/utility world. The "experts" have continually forecast significant growth for nuclear energy, which has remained flat. And they have continually expected renewable energy to stop growing, when the reality has been accelerated adoption

Airborne colored microplastics absorb significantly more sunlight than previously estimated, trapping heat in the atmosphere and contributing to global warming alongside traditional pollutants like soot. doi.org/hb2hfx

Colored microplastics could be making global warming worse
There's more bad news about microplastics. We already know they pose a risk to health and can pollute ecosystems, but now researchers have discovered that tiny plastic particles drifting in Earth's atmosphere could be a significant contributor to global warming.

Delay isn’t empty time. It’s structured, produced and political. In climate governance, it accumulates - layered like a palimpsest - reshaping what action even means. New essay on how we don’t act (and why). open.substack.com/pub/daniadmi...
