Fab story from Margaret Hamilton, RIP, showing why Science-Mums are brilliant scientists! When innovating at the cutting edge of technology, it's so important to bring together a wide range of lived experiences. Sad that only ~20% comp-scientists are female 👩‍🔬🧪 ℹ️: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Often in the evening or at weekends I would bring my young daughter, Lauren, into work with me. One day, she was with me when I was doing a simulation of a mission to the moon. She liked to imitate me – playing astronaut. She started hitting keys and all of a sudden, the simulation started. Then she pressed other keys and the simulation crashed. She had selected a program which was supposed to be run prior to launch – when she was already “on the way” to the moon. The computer had so little space, it had wiped the navigation data taking her to the moon. I thought: my God – this could inadvertently happen in a real mission. I suggested a program change to prevent a prelaunch program being selected during flight. But the higher-ups at MIT and Nasa said the astronauts were too well trained to make such a mistake. Midcourse on the very next mission – Apollo 8 – one of the astronauts on board accidentally did exactly what Lauren had done. The Lauren bug! It created much havoc and required the mission to be reconfigured. After that, they let me put the program change in, all right.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

“How much is a magical world worth?” A beautiful thread about Cabo Verde, the Peace Corps, and the World Cup:
Jill Tucker

If you ever doubt how magical this world is, one day you will decide to go to a World Cup watch party in Oakland that you found online to root for a country where you spent two years trying to coax English out of the mouths of Cape Verdean teenagers. 1/7

And at the watch party you will ask the organizer if he's from Cape Verde. He will say yes, from Praia. And you'll say oh! I lived there for two years. I was a teacher. And he will ask, "What's your name?" You will tell him and he will say,
"You were my teacher."
CABO VERDE
11:43 AM • 6/25/26 • 92K ViewsJill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h
And across 30+ years and 6,000 miles you will hug a now man who tried to find you and remembered the songs you taught him and his classmates and he will apologize for how badly behaved they all were. And you will laugh and try not to cry and gape in wonder at at this crazy world.

Jill Tucker
@jilltucker

You will remember how much you love the World Cup. And what the Peace Corps meant to you. What those students, 40 to a class with no glass on the windows, meant to you.

Ivan, the grown man with a touch of grey in his beard, will tell you later he has struggled to describe what it meant to him to meet again - that he shared our photo with classmates.
And when he returns from watching the Cabo Verde game, we will try to find the words together.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h And then you read that the US
House of Representatives will vote a day before that game on an amendment to eliminate the Peace Corps, which costs 1/6 the price of the Tomahawk missiles the US used in the war on Iran.

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

Welcome to the last half of the US federal fiscal year. Here is where we're at with National Science Foundation--the agency that funds basically everything other than biomedical research at American universities--grant numbers. grant-witness.us/funding_curv...
NSF grant curve from link for 2021 through 2026, with each year shown as a different color. By this point in the year, NSF made 3,300 or more grants in 2021-2024 and 2,087 in 2025. This year 737 have been awarded. Both this year and 2025 seem to have an odd slow down about now in the rate of new grants not present in earlier years, in addition to the general lower rates.NSF's geosciences directorate award numbers, basically identical in shape to the overall NSF curves. Prior years saw around 400-500 grants awarded by this point in the fiscal year, 2025 saw only 278 grants awarded, this year has only 95 grants awarded.

This is amazing: A direct image of the shadow of a black hole. A direct image of the hot, swirling gas circling and falling into it. And brand-new images showing an apparent magnetic flip around the black hole, a sign of turbulent, tumultuous changes. 🧪🔭 eventhorizontelescope.org/new-eht-imag...
New images from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration have revealed a dynamic environment with changing polarization patterns in the magnetic fields of supermassive black hole M87*. As shown in the images above, while M87*’s magnetic fields appeared to spiral one direction in 2017, they settled in 2018 and reversed direction in 2021. The cumulative effects of this polarization change over time suggests that M87* and its surrounding environment are constantly evolving. Credit: EHT Collaboration

The National Science Foundation has halted for at least the rest of the week the work of review panels, in which outside experts rate the merit of proposals for scientific research.

The NSF, a $10 billion agency that spreads research dollars across the country in quantities both large and small, issued a brief statement Monday that added minimal clarity to a situation that had alarmed researchers.

DOJ released a report finding the Worcester, Massachusetts police department guilty of a pattern or practice of civil rights violations. www.justice.gov/crt/media/13...
FINDINGS
The Department of Justice has reasonable cause to believe that the
Worcester Police Department and the City of Worcester engage in a pattern or practice of conduct that deprives people of their rights under the Constitution and federal law:
• WPD uses excessive force that violates the Fourth Amendment.
Officers unreasonably deploy Tasers, use police dogs, and strike
people in the head. Officers rapidly escalate minor incidents by
using more force than necessary, including during encounters with
people who have behavioral health disabilities or are in crisis.
• WPD engages in outrageous government conduct that violates the
constitutional rights of women suspected of being involved in the
commercial sex trade by engaging in sexual contact during
undercover operations. This violates the Fourteenth Amendment’s
due process clause.
